Prithvi Shaw to be called upon: Team India will be up against England in a month’s time for the much anticipated five-match Test series. However, the visitors have been struck by some bad news as opening batsman Shubman Gill sustained a stress related injury in his left leg. At this stage, it is possible that Gill could be on the sidelines for the entire campaign.
In Shubman Gill’s absence, Virat Kohli and the management will have to look at alternatives to partner alongside Rohit Sharma. The likes of Mayank Agarwal, KL Rahul and Abumanyu Easarna are also in the squad, and could be options to consider.
That being said, there are rumors circulating around the BCCI office, that Prithvi Shaw, who’s currently in Sri Lanka, could also be asked to travel to the UK.
“Here is a batsman (Prithvi Shaw) in absolute form right now, playing an inconsequential series (in Sri Lanka) whereas he can be in England and the team will have a cushion to fall back on. It’s been five days now and the selectors haven’t even blinked yet,” one of the sources said.
“As against having to fall back on a batsman (Easwaran) who last did his bit in the First Class circuit more than two seasons ago. Isn’t it more sensible to have a batsman (Prithvi) who’s in form and the elements of his batting well documented already? The team knows Prithvi, understands Prithvi. If they think he should be in England, then there is no reason why the BCCI should not sending him,” he added.
As of now, Prithvi Shaw is in Sri Lanka, as he prepares for the three-match T20I series, followed by the three-match ODI series. The squad that is in the United Kingdom was named prior to the WTC Final, and an official confirmation regarding further additions to it awaits.
