Ireland vs South Africa: Ireland created one of the upsets of the summer as they beat South Africa by 43 runs in the second ODI. Batting first, Ireland scored a total of 290/5 in 50 overs of play, while, bundling out the visitors for 247. The Irish also displayed glimpses of their quality in the first ODI, but the match was interrupted after 40 overs, and was eventually called of. After getting a 1-0 lead, the pressure will now be on South Africa, as Ireland can no longer lose the series. That being said, we can expect another intriguing affair between the two teams, and here are some key players who could have big role to play for the 3rd and final ODI.
The Ireland captain has led by example, and is on course of being name the ‘Player of the Series’. In the first ODI, Andrew Balbirnie scored a solid knock of 65 runs. His best, however, was seen in the next game as he played a memorable innings of 102. This was Balbirnie’s 7th century in the 50-over-format for Ireland, and he will be soaring high in confidence ahead of the final game versus South Africa.
Janneman Malan was one of the rare standouts for South Africa in the run chase, and scored a good knock of 84 runs in the second ODI. Though still pretty much inexperienced in the international circuit, Malan averages 76.5 from the six games so far. He also has two fifties, and a hundred under his belt.
Joshua Little impressed with the ball in hand by picking two wickets for 45 runs from the 10 overs. Little has featured in 12 ODIs so far for Ireland, and has bagged 21 wickets in the process, which includes two four-wicket hauls.
Rassie van der Dussen
Rassie van der Dussen has been one of the most consistent batsman in recent times. The 32-year-old scored 49 in the previous game versus Ireland and showed some resilience. Rassie van der Dussen, from the 25 ODIs he has featured in for South Africa, currently averages 78.2. This includes eight fifties and one hundred as well.
Paul Stirling did get brief starts in the first two ODIs, but failed to convert them into big scores. Nonetheless, the specialist opening batsman does posses the experience, and the quality to have a major influence in the final ODI. Stirling has scored 4863 runs from 130 ODIs, while, averaging close to 40.
