Beating India by 4-1 would be a perfect send-off for Cook
It’s all done and dusted and England have already clinched the series by 3-1. When both the teams meet for this encounter, where India will aim to end the series on a high, England will look forward to beating India by 4-1.
Backing the idea of outplaying by 4-1, England skipper has said that beating India by 4-1 would be a perfect way of giving a farewell to Alastair Cook in the final Test and added that a win will send a strong statement to the world.
Root said that Cook had informed him about his retirement in Southampton but that would not be a distraction for the team.
An emotional week for the England cricket team
“It is going to be an emotional week for him and other players who have played a lot of cricket with him. Not having him in the dressing room will be a great loss for us but I am really excited to have him in the team.”
The England skipper also said that Alastair did not want to fuss about his retirement and he felt that it was the right time to announce his retirement.
“We have not got anything planned as such but I am sure we will do something spontaneous. I am pretty sure that the ground, the occasion and everyone involved will also help him do that. I do not think that it is going to be a distraction but I believe it will motivate us all in doing better,” he said.
“He means a lot to the whole dressing room and I am sure they will be desperate to do everything possible to give him a perfect send-off.”
Talking about Alastair Cook’s impact on the whole team, he said, “I clearly remember him as someone who walked into the dressing room and made it look so easy to go at the top order. I managed to get a few games in Australia where he smacked it everywhere. It was completely phenomenal.
The hosts have announced an unchanged playing XI where Jonny Bairstow will take up the wicket-keeping responsibilities and Moeen Ali will bat at number three.
