With 26 needed off 6 balls, MS Dhoni played like MS Dhoni and slammed a four and three sixes separated by a couple of runs in the first five balls to make it to two runs off one ball. But he failed to make contact with the final ball and his partner Shardul Thakur was run out as RCB won a last ball thriller and registered their third win in IPL 2019.
Needing 162 runs to win, Chennai had a horrible start with Dale Steyn removing Shane Watson and Suresh Raina on the fifth and sixth ball of the first over. Umesh Yadav removed Faf du Plessis in the fourth over and dismissed Jadhav in his next over. And Chennai were at four down for 28 runs after Powerplays.
MS Dhoni bailed out CSK by adding 55 runs for the fifth wicket with Ambati Rayudu (29 off 29 balls) but then Ravindra Jadeja scored just 11 off 12 balls as the required run-rate crept up.
Dhoni however was standing tall from the other end and hammered Steyn and Saini for a six each in the 18th and the 19th over. However with 26 needed off the last over he went berserk and clobbered Yadav for a four on the first ball.
The next two balls were slammed for sixes and then Dhoni took two runs on the fourth ball. With eight needed off 2 balls, Dhoni tonked another six as CSK were at the brink of a sensational win.
But Yadav smartly delivered an off-cutter outside off stump and Dhoni missed his cut shot as Parthiv ran Thakur out. Dhoni remained not out on 84 off 48 balls and scored seven sixes.
