2013 – A 14-year-old boy from Mumbai steals the limelight after slamming a whopping 546 runs off 330 balls in the city’s inter-school competition.
2016 – The same boy slams a century in his Ranji trophy debut match, the semi-final against Tamil Nadu to book a place for his team in the finals.
2018 – Taking giant strides, the boy captains India under 19 team and wins them the elusive trophy.
2018 – Prithvi Shaw is drafted in India’s Test team at the age of 18-years after playing 14 first-class games and scoring close to two thousand runs at an average of 56.72.
This timeline is nothing but a reflection of Shaw’s tremendous rise in domestic cricket. The Mumbai batsman, known for his glorious drives and punches on the offside, has an appetite for big scores which is evident in his statistics. In his last 12 innings, he has scored four centuries and in first-class cricket, he has more hundreds than the fifties. (Seven hundred and five fifties.)
On a personal front, Shaw’s story is even more inspiring. The right-hand batsman lost his mother at the age of four and since then cricket has been his only focus in life. His father gave up his business and accompanied the young Shaw to various maidans of Mumbai. Earlier the duo used to commute for more than one hour every day in the jam-packed Mumbai locals to reach to the grounds.
Soon after the news of Shaw’s selection broke out, Twitter too erupted with congratulatory messages for the youngsters.
Vinod Kambli, too posted his wishes.
Shaw has played in England in the past. In fact, he has had five trips to this country so far which includes an invitation to play for Cheadle Hulme School in Manchester in 2012 where he amassed more than one thousand runs and his recent tour with the India A team. During his stint with the India A team, Shaw produced knocks of 70, 132, 102 and 188. These scores caught the selector’s eye and stamped his selection in the team.
The fourth Test between India and England starts on August 30th and it will be interesting to see whether Shaw is picked ahead of Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul in the playing XI.
