The former Indian pace bowler Zaheer Khan turned 40 today and the cricket fraternity wished him on Twitter. There were tweets wishing Zaheer on twitter the entire day and former cricketer, analysts and fans were busy remembering one of India’s finest pace bowlers.
Zaheer Khan was arguably India’s best seamer in the shorter format of the game. He is one of India’s leading wicket-taker in ODIs and has 282 ODI wickets in 200 ODIs. He was also India’s leading wicket-taker in the 2003, 2007 and 2011 world cup. He played a vital role in the 2011 world cup which India won under the leadership of MS Dhoni.
Zaheer was prolific in Tests as well and although injuries affected his career he ended with impressive figures. He claimed 311 wickets in 92 Tests and had an average of 32.94. The fact that he played most of his cricket on lifeless Indian wickets and with no support at other end makes his numbers even more glorious.
On this occasion, BCCI posted a video clip of Zaheer’s best bowling figures in ODI. In the match against Sri Lanka, Zaheer claimed five wickets.
Zaheer has always remained a popular cricketer. He was known for his never-die attitude and passionate bowling efforts. On his 40th birthday, the cricket fraternity wished him on Twitter.
Former India cricketers including Virender Sehwag, Parthiv Patel, Akash Chopra, and many others recalled fond memories of playing with Zaheer bhai as he was known in the team.
The official account of Lord’s cricket ground recalled Zaheer’s finest bowling at the venue.
