Kaur steals the thunder in her debut match
India’s women T20 skipper, Harmanpreet Kaur sealed a match for Lancashire Thunder her the Kia Women’s Super League debut match as she smashed the penultimate ball to help her team win a thriller against Surrey Stars on Tuesday at the Oval.
Thunder, who were chasing 148 against Surrey Stars won the match by five wickets with a ball to spare.
Kaur remained unbeaten on 34 off 21 balls as her knock included a six and three fours.
Nicole Bolton, Thunder’s opening batter top-scored for the team as she scored 87 runs off 61 balls which included 13 boundaries.
Earlier, batting first, Surrey posted a total of 148/5 in their allocated 20 overs with their skipper, Natalie Sciver being the top-scorer for the side (95* off 57 balls).
Surrey lost their wickets early with Lizelle Lee, Bryony Smith and Sarah Taylor getting dismissed for just 17 runs on the board. But, Dane van Niekerk and Natalie Sciver built the innings for the team and they stitched a much-needed partnership.
Coming to chase later-on, Nicole Bolton started for Lancashire with a promising start who scored 87 runs off 61 balls, but she perished on the third ball of the 19th over, followed by Emma Lamb.
Kaur then took the reins of the match in her hands and she took a single on the third delivery of the over.
Lancashire needed eight runs off three deliveries when Kaur smashed a four and hit the ball out of the park to help her team register their third consecutive win.
Meanwhile, Indian opener Smriti Mandhana is also making big strides in the T20 league.
She continued her dominant run in the Women’s Cricket Super League as she scored an unbeaten 43 off 27 balls, helping Western Storm to a nine-wicket win against Southern Vipers.
Her unbeaten half-century in the previous game equalled the record of the fastest half-century in the women T20I history.
Mandhana had shared an unbeaten 54-run partnership alongside New Zealand’s Rachel Priest to fashion an emphatic win for her side.
