Windies cricketers pay respect to Sunil Ambrose’ father, Walford Ambris

In the third ODI between India and Windies at Pune, courtesy of some heroic batting by Shai Hope and lower order batsmen, the Windies team has put up a respectable total and has once again challenged the Indian batting order.

However apart from Hope’s stunning batting and Jasprit Bumrah’s comeback in the ODI team, one more thing caught the attention of cricket fraternity in the third ODI. Windies cricketers were seen wearing black arm-bands on their shoulders. This was done by the visiting side to pay respect to Sunil Ambris’ father Walford Ambris who passed away recently.

Walford Ambris played club cricket in the Caribbean for a long time and represented the Saints Cricket Club. His left arm spin bowling was highly effective and he was also known for his left-hand batting.

His two sons Romel Currency and Sunil Ambrose are also cricketers. Romel featured in first-class cricket while Sunil featured in the Tests against India.

India won the toss and elected to bat first at Pune. Jasprit Bumrah who returned to ODI cricket proved it a right decision as he sent back both Windies openers in the ninth over.

Then, in the middle overs Shai Hope and Shimron Hetmyer tried to arrest the damage by building a partnership but Kuldeep Yadav struck twice in the middle overs to push the visitors on the back-foot.

Shai Hope produced yet another resilient innings to keep the scoreboard ticking and he dragged the Windies innings till the death overs. But he fell five runs short of a hundred and was castled by Bumrah on 95. Nurse used the long handle in the death overs to fetch quick runs and pushed Windies to a total of 283 runs after 50 overs.
