IPL Winners – The Indian Premier League is one of the most high-profile sporting league in the world right now. The league which was started on an experimental basis in 2008 has witnessed exponential growth in the span of just 13 years.

IPL 2008 Winner – Rajasthan Royals

The inaugural edition of the league was won by the underdogs, Rajasthan Royals. First IPL winners were led by Australian legend Shane Warne. RR had one of the least illustrious teams among all eight teams. Having spent the least amount of money in the auction, they only managed to get the services of very few top international and domestic stars. But despite all these, under the guidance of Shane Warne, they overcame all odds and managed to outcast every other opposition. Having won 11 out of 14 league stage games, they topped the points table and finally outperformed MS Dhoni led CSK in the finals. They won the finals with a margin of 3 wickets.

IPL 2009 winner – Deccan Chargers

The second edition of the league was held in South Africa due to the general elections in India. This gave a perfect opportunity for Deccan Chargers, who was the wooden spoon holder of inaugural edition to start from scratch. Under the leadership of their new captain Adam Gilchrist they managed to qualify for the playoffs by accumulating just 14 points. In the playoffs, they were a different beast altogether. They defeated the mighty Delhi Daredevils in the semis, who were having a dream run so far. In the finals, they defeated RCB by 6 runs in a tightly contested encounter.

IPL 2010 winner – Chennai Super Kings

2010 was the year which marked the beginning of the golden CSK era. After entering playoffs for two years consecutively, CSK finally managed to get their hands on the trophy in 2010. They defeated the table toppers and their arch rivals Mumbai Indians in the finals by a margin of 22 runs.

2011 was a golden year for MS Dhoni in all aspects. After having won the 2011 World Cup, he led CSK to their 2nd consecutive title by defeating the mighty RCB in the finals. It was a season where the Gayle Storm was unleashed to its at most destructiveness. But CSK, with the help of Ashwin managed to restrict Gayle in the finals and hence continued their dream run.

IPL 2012 Winner – Kolkata Knight Riders

After miserable first three season, KKR completely revamped their team in the 2011 auction. They took some tough decisions like leaving out Kolkata’s prince and their former captain, Sourav Ganguly from the team. But this move and the new leadership group including Gautam Gambhir and Trevor Bayliss helped the City of Joy to finally have their share of joy with respect to the IPL. Having won 10 of the 16 league games, they finished 2nd after the league stage. And finally, they restricted the mighty CSK who were looking for a hattrick title and thereby managed to clinch their first ever IPL title.

IPL 2013 Winner – Mumbai Indians

The golden era of Mumbai Indians started in 2013, when their captain Ricky Ponting decided to step down from captaincy, mid-way through the season as he felt that he as a batsman was a liability to the team. He passed on the baton to Rohit Sharma, and then started the era of a new Mumbai Indians. He under the guidance of Ponting scripted a fairytale comeback. After losing most of their initial matches, they went onto tie with CSK on most number of points in the league stages and even outplayed them in the finals by 23 runs.

IPL 2014 Winner – Kolkata Knight Riders

2014 was supposed to be a dream year for Kings XI Punjab. They were unstoppable in the Dubai leg of the tournament and were also dominant in the Indian leg as well. But a strong KKR unit, who found out a way to stay undefeated ensured that the dream of KXIP were shattered. After a mixed start to their campaign KKR remained unbeaten for 7 consecutive games and consecutively defeated KXIP in a thrilling final.

IPL 2015 winner – Mumbai Indians

The new age Mumbai was at its full strength in 2015. Grassroot level scouting from John Wright and co. ensured that the future stars including the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya and Krunal Pandya were drafted into the mix of a star-studded lineup. After finishing 2nd to CSK in the league stages, MI got the better of their arch rivals in the finals by a margin of 41 runs.

IPL 2016 winner – Sunrisers Hyderabad

Maybe 2016 could’ve been the year for Virat Kohli and boys. While RCB was creating havoc with the bat, SRH was defending the lowest of the lowest totals in the 2016 season. And finally, when they met in a high scoring final in Chinnaswamy, it was SRH who had the better of RCB by 8 runs.

IPL 2017 Winner – Mumbai Indians

Romance between Sharma ji ka beta and odd years continued yet again as MI got the better off Rising Pune Super Giants in a thrilling final. RPS who was playing their last match before getting dismantled had a perfect opportunity to leave the IPL as champions. But brilliant death over bowling from MI prevented them from completing what could’ve been a perfect heist.

IPL 2018 Winner – Chennai Super Kings

IPL 2018 saw a fairytale comeback from CSK. After being banned from the tournament for 2 years, they came back in 2018 and defeated SRH in the finals, courtesy of a one man show from Shane Watson.

IPL 2019 Winner – Mumbai Indians

MI registered their 4th title win in 2019 by defeating CSK in a last ball thriller. A perfect yorker from Malinga ensured that CSK fall short of the 4th title by just one run.

IPL 2020 Winner – Mumbai Indians

Dominance of MI continued for yet another year as they registered their 5th title in IPL 2020, which was held entirely in UAE. They defeated a young DC side in the finals and became the 2nd team along with CSK to win IPL title in consecutive years.
