Kings XI Punjab vs Rajasthan Royals
The Big Picture
After a humbling at the hands of the Mumbai Indians, KXIP has now lost two games back-to-back. While they failed to chase down a poultry 132 against SRH, they lacked potency against, Mumbai Indians, which raises a valid question that is they too dependent on the opening duo of Gayle and Rahul. The opening duo again laid a platform with a 50-run partnership against MI, but a couple of things halted their progress in the middle-order. A bizarre batting order that saw an out-of-form Yuvraj Singh at No.3 and Mayank Aggarwal batting at 7 behind Axar Patel proceeded to drive out the momentum from their innings and if not for Marcus Stoinis (29 off 15 balls) last over heist against Hardik they looked prime for an under-power target.
In terms of bowling too, Axar Patel bowled just one over, and Rajpoot (0-31) and Marcus Stonis (1-37) had an underwhelming game as they leaked too many runs to aide Mumbai Indians get past the target. While Punjab is still in a good position with ten points, their opponents in Rajasthan Royals have a problem of plenty as they strive to get their fledgling campaign back on track. Currently placed at bottom of the table with six points, Rajasthan’s bowling came in for a thrashing against Delhi Daredevils in the previous match, with the likes of Unadkat, Kulkarni, and Stokes going in for plenty. Chasing 151 in 12 overs, RR made a move to the slot in Buttler at the top which paid immediate dividends as he produced a swashbuckling fifty to keep his team in the game. Short and Stokes form still remains a concern and it is how their overseas marquee players perform will define their campaign moving forward.
