After reigning supreme in the Asia Cup 2018, India will now host West Indies in their kingdom for a two-match Test series. Even after losing the Test series against England by 4-1, India remained on the top spot in the ICC Test rankings and they will aim to maintain their position when they take on the Windies in Rajkot for the first Test match.

Led by Virat Kohli, the Indian team will be clashing against Jason Holder-led West Indies at Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Rajkot on 4 October. BCCI dropped Shikhar Dhawan from the Indian squad following his dismal form in England and included domestic cricket sensation Mayank Agarwal in the squad. Moreover, they have also rested their premier bowlers Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ishant Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah. Hardik Pandya is yet to recover from his injury, thus India will also have to play sans Pandya.

Windies coach, Stuart Law has already admitted that taking on India in their own backyard is going to be a tough task. The statistical record also hugely favours India as they have never lost a Test series against their opponents since 2002. Over the last sixteen years, India have played six Test series against the Windies where India have won 10 of the 19 matches played while the remaining nine have ended in a draw.

On the eve of the match, the hosts have announced a 12-match squad which has almost confirmed a debut for 18-year old Prithvi Shaw who is most likely to open with KL Rahul.

As per the 12, India are yet to decide their bowling combinations as they have shortlisted three pacers and three spinners and they are most likely to leave one out of the group. For Windies, it will be an opportunity to better their previous record against India as they have also possessed a well-balanced side with Jason Holder, Kraig Brathwaite, Kieran Powell, Devendra Bishoo and Shanon Gabriel by their side. Although Kemar Roach will be unavailable for the 1st Test, Holder, Gabriel and Keemo Paul will lead the pace attack.
