Alex Neena Gupta was born in New Delhi on July 4, 1959, to middle-class parents RN Gupta and Shakuntala. She did her schooling at The Lawrence School, Sanawar and grew up in a strict non-filmy background. She has one sibling, brother Pankaj Gupta. Both of them were told from early on to focus on studies.

She did her post graduations and MPhil in Sanskrit Literature from Delhi University and is an alumnus of the National School of Drama, New Delhi.

Movies

Gupta has made appearances in several international films, such as Gandhi (1982), The Deceivers (1988), Mirza Ghalib (1989), In Custody (1993), and Cotton Mary (1999).

In Hindi movies, her performance was especially noted in the satirical movie, Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro (1983). She also starred along with Madhuri Dixit in Khalnayak (1993); she was featured in the popular song “Choli ke peeche” in the movie. She has made television movies, Lajwanti and Bazar Sitaram (1993). The later of which won the 1993 National Film Award for Best First Non-Feature Film.

In recent times she was widely recognized for her portrayal in Badhaai Ho for which she also won numerous awards. Also, her recent roles in movies like Mulk and Veere Di Wedding have also been appreciated. Her most recent project, a film, helmed by Star Chef Vikas Khanna, The Last Colour, has also been well received not just in India but internationally.

She has done several TV shows. Some of them include-  Khandaan (1985), Yatra (1986), Gulzar’s Mirza Ghalib (1987), Shyam Benegal’s Bharat Ek Khoj (1988), Dard (1994), Gumraah (1995), Shrimaan Shrimati (1995), SaansSaat Phere: Saloni Ka Safar (2005), Chitthi (2003), Meri Biwi Ka Jawab Nahin (2004). She has also acted in the TV serial, Buniyaad.

She also hosted the Indian version of the TV series The Weakest LinkKamzor Kadii Kaun and also appeared in the popular show Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin which gave her considerable popularity.

She has directed successful TV series, such as Saans (1999), Siski in (2000) and Kyun Hota Hai Pyarrr (2002). She has also played roles in shows like Ladies Special (2009), Dil se Diya Vachan (2010).

She also ran a theatre production company, ‘Sahaj Productions’ with actor, Rajendra Gupta, and acted as well as produced Hindi plays like Soorya Ki Antim Kiran Se Soorya Ki Paheli Kiran Tak.

The actress who is considered a strong woman, though who shares that she is a very homely and vulnerable person, during an interview gave the following advice to all women — “Never show a man that he is indispensable, or he will start taking advantage of you. Be financially independent, work hard, and love yourself or you will lose your identity.”

It is known that Neena’s first affair was with Alok Nath, though it was short-lived. It was in the 1980s that the two met for a TV show. Though it was short-lived and the two walked separate paths thereafter.

Post that she met Shaarangdev, the son of the popular Indian classical vocalist Pandit Jasraj. The two worked together and fell in love. They both were engaged to be married, however, it was then that Neena’s worst nightmare became a reality. While Neena was deeply in love with him, however, a very tough time followed for her as Shaarangdev called off the wedding.

In the late 1980s, the West Indian cricket team came to India for some cricket matches. Vivian Richards, who was the captain of the team, had an image of being a Casanova. He was married at that time and had two children, but it was also speculated that he had separated from his wife and was living with his girlfriend.

It is said that Neena and Richard met at a party in Mumbai, though it can’t be said for sure. The two seemed passionately attracted to each other and it was only a few months down the line that Neena was seen with a baby bump.

Neena was aware that marriage with Richards was not on the cards, but against the wishes of her friends and family, she chose to go ahead with her pregnancy and give birth to her love child, Masaba Gupta.

Life brought a different plan with itself when in 2002 the 43-year-old Neena met a Delhi-based Chartered Accountant, Vivek Mehra, on a flight and the two hit of instantly. Vivek, a chartered accountant, and partner with PwC India was separated from his wife then. He has two daughters and is living in Delhi.

Neena shared in an interview that she thinks that both of them were destined to meet. It was on the same flight, when they met for the first time, that a woman exchanged her seat with him, and he ended up sitting next to her. She shares that he pretended not to recognize her and flirted away to glory.

It has been shared that Vivek and Neena dated each other for over 6 years before the two finally got married. Though Neena had always believed that marriage was necessary to her, however, after being with Vivek for a long time her ideology about the same changed and marriage was something that she was now wanting. It was in 2008 that Vivek’s divorce was finalized. Thereafter in July 2008, Neena and Vivek left for US to attend one of his relative’s wedding. There Vivek proposed to Neena, to which she was completely unaware, and the two got married then and there. Vivek had already planned the entire thing all on his own and all that he needed from Neena was a “yes”.

We met on a flight — I think we were destined to meet. A Neena married New-Delhi based Neena once shared that maintaining a relationship is tough, but she is learning to manage and is happy. Since she continues to live in Mumbai but both Neena and Vivek visit each other frequently.

She has always been known and much talked about personality. She has been in the public eye not just for her professional life but her unusual, as per Indian society, personal life as well. Though she is a two-time national award-winning actress (therefore is a powerhouse of talent), she has often been typed cast and has faced a time where she had no work.
