FIFA World Cup 2018

There are three games lined up for the seventh day of FIFA World Cup 2018. The teams to contest in today’s affair are Portugal and Morocco, Uruguay and Saudi Arabia, Iran and Spain.

Portugal vs Morocco

This is going to be the second game for both these Group-B teams. Portugal on the back of their captain and marquee player Cristiano Ronaldo’s hat-trick against Spain in the last match oversaw a draw while Morocco didn’t start well in the tournament and flattered against Iran where they were expected to win.

When: June 20th, 05:30 PM IST

Where: Luzhniki Stadium, Moscow

After a very long time, Portugal is considered more than a dark horse after their recent triumph in the Euro Cup 2016. There have been some ups and downs since then, but they have been ticking the boxes right with their preparations for the tournament. In the opening game against the 2010 World Champions Spain, they played a draw where the captain netted thrice in the match, and they could not have asked for any better performance against a side which has beaten them 17 times.

With the likes of the young forward Andre Silva, who admitted that he would relish the opportunity to play alongside a star like Cristiano Ronaldo if he gets picked for the match against Morocco and the veteran defender Bruno Alves this side definitely looks impressive and enthralling.

Morocco were expected to begin their campaign with a win against Iran after a tottering 17 win streak on their back before coming into the competition, but things didn’t go their way, and they were beaten 0-1 by Iran. They have a good side with the likes of the forward, Aziz Bouhaddouz who will be the guy on whom the team will revolve. Going into this game, Morocco has the upper hand when we talk about the head to head stats as they have defeated Portugal 3-1 in their only meeting in the group stages of 1986 World Cup.

When: June 20th, 08:30 PM IST

Where: Rostov Arena, Rostov-on-Don

This will be the second game at this venue after the match between Brazil and Switzerland which ended up in a draw. It is quite early to mention about the standings in the group table, but the fact is, Uruguay are on the second spot while Saudi Arabia are reeling at the bottom.

Uruguay had a tenacious win against Egypt, and the match was a riveting contest. The Green Falcons had a disappointing game though as they were left with nothing and the hosts were all over them throughout the course of the match. Uruguay’s captain will become the sixth footballer from the country to appear in 100 games when he will take the pitch against the Green falcons on Wednesday.

He has netted 51 goals in his glorious career and has established himself as the all-time highest goal scorer for the country. Talking about the head to head meetings, the two sides have never squared off against each other. Thus, this will be their first meeting.

Spain are considered among the European giants as they possess some extraordinary talent in their line-up. Isco heaped praise for the interim Spain head coach Fernando Hierro for having the sanity not to make significant changes since taking the reins from the former in-charge Julen Lopetegui as the Spanish side will target to register their first win of the tournament.

Diego Costa emerged as the talking point after he netted two goals against Portugal in their opening game. He will look to get a third one in this match and place himself with Cristiano Ronaldo with most goals in this edition till now. Spain has all the firepower to retaliate any opponent on their way with the likes of Isco, Andre Iniesta, Sergio Ramos, Jordi Alba, Diego Costa, Gerard Pique etc. as they possess a proper amalgamation of youths and experienced players.

Iran put up an impressive show in the opening game against Morocco where they defeated a team who were on a 17 matches winning streak. They were the underdogs going into the game as their opponents were in impeccable form, but they turned the tables by a 1-0 win. The 23 year old Sardar Azmoun is an impressive talent, and he will be the key striker for this fairly young side.
