Christian Eriksen is a Danish professional footballer who currently has a contract with Inter Milan until 2024. Beginning his career with Ajax, the 29-year-old former Spurs star has always been a key playmaker for every team he has played for.
In a game against Finland in the ongoing Euro 2020, Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest and collapsed on the pitch as he received the ball from a throw-in just before half-time. Referee Anthony Taylor immediately stopped the game and medics rushed in with a stretcher and other medical equipment. CPR had to be given to the player by the medics. The home crowd along with fans all over the world prayed in earnest as broadcasters continued to show the feed live from Parken Stadium, Copenhagen. The match was eventually suspended by UEFA until a meeting was held where it was revealed to both the teams that Christian was stable. The game resumed two hours later and Finland went on to win by a solitary goal.
It was reported that Eriksen gave a thumbs up and was conscious as he was carried off the ground. He also apparently had a video call with his mates from the hospital. The medical staff, both the teams, and especially Simon Kjaer should be commended for their actions. Kjaer, who dons the armband for Denmark, rushed onto the scene and reportedly prevented Eriksen from swallowing his tongue.
Eriksen is now in a stable condition and will hopefully make a complete recovery. What exactly happened is still under speculation. Denmark team doctor, Martin Bonsen, said that Eriksen ‘was gone’ but that they had managed to get him back after just one defibrillation. The player continues to be hospitalized for further examination.
Eriksen is married to Sabrina Kvist Jensen. He is very private about his life outside the pitch. Sabrina is a trained hairdresser who also keeps a low profile.
Speaking about the incident on Saturday, Former Denmark and Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel revealed that Sabrina believed that her husband ‘had died’ until she was reassured by the players that he was still breathing.
The midfielder earns 240k pounds per week with Inter Milan.
Christian Eriksen is estimated to be worth 17.8 million pounds.
