Viswanathan Anand is an Indian chess grandmaster and five times world chess champion. He is one of the greatest players in the history of chess and arguably the most versatile player of his generation. He has been a world champion across different formats: knockout, tournament, and match. Although he dominated the sport for nearly three decades, his peak years were between 2007 and 2013. In a cricket-loving nation, the King of chess has been a popular figure and inspired millions of kids to take up the board game.

Anand is 51-years-old. He was born on 11 December 1969 in Madras, Tamil Nadu, India. Nicknamed the ‘lightning kid,’ he started learning chess from his mother from the age of six. National success came early, and he was already an international master and Indian chess champion at 16.

The average IQ of top Grandmasters is believed to be in the region of 180-190 (+/- 20). Although blessed with a great mind, Anand worked his way to the top through sheer hard work and perseverance.
