Last 4 Meetings

Both sides won 2 games each during the last 4 meetings between them. GL stunned everyone by completing a season double over Mumbai Indians in 2016 IPL season, Mumbai Indians returned the favour in 2017. Both sides have registered one home and one away victory over each other during these 4 cricket matches.

MI vs GL 2017 meetings

The first game between the two sides was played at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. The home side won the toss and invited Gujarat Lions to bat first. Mumbai had an excellent start with the ball as they accounted for Dwayne Smith’s wicket on the 2nd delivery of the innings. However, Brandon McCullum (64 runs off 44 deliveries) and Suresh Raina (28 runs) added 80 runs for the 2nd wicket to keep things on the track. Both players got out in the quick succession, but a vital knock of unbeaten 48 runs off 26 deliveries from Dinesh Karthik gave a much-needed boost to GL’s innings. Jason Roy also remained not out for 14 runs off 7 deliveries to take the Lions to a total of 176/4 in 20 overs. New Zealand pacer Mitchell McClenaghan finished with 2/24 in his 4 overs with the ball. Mumbai Indians had a similar start to the Lions chasing the target. Opener Parthiv Patel was dismissed on the 2nd delivery of the innings. From there, Jos Buttler (26 runs) and Nitish Rana (53 runs off 36 deliveries) added 85 runs for the 2nd wicket. Upon the departure of both batsmen, skipper Rohit Sharma (40 runs unbeaten) and Kieron Pollard (39 runs) took MI closer to the target. While Pollard was dismissed after a 68-runs partnership, Sharma alongside Hardik Pandya took MI home. Mumbai Indians registered a 6 wickets win over the Lions. Andrew Tye picked up 2 wickets with the ball for GL. Mumbai Indians’ batsman Nitish Rana was awarded player of the match.

The reverse fixture was played at GL’s home Saurashtra Cricket Association Ground, Rajkot. The home side won the toss and opted to bat first. The Lions have had a poor start with the bat. While the opener Ishan Kishan held his one end, GL lost 4 quick wickets from the other end. Later Kishan (48 runs off 35 deliveries) also got out to leave GL in tatters. Useful contributions from Ravindra Jadeja (28 runs) and Andrew Tye (25 runs off 12 deliveries) took GL to a respectable total of 153/9 in 20 overs. Krunal Pandya returned with the outstanding figures of 3/14 in 4 overs. Chasing the target, Mumbai Indians’ innings went on to a similar trajectory to the Lions. While Parthiv Patel (70 runs off 44 deliveries) held on to one end, the rest of the batting crumbled around him. All-rounder Krunal Pandya also contributed 29 runs with the bat and, in the end, the visitors were bundled out at 153. The game ended up as a tie, and the result was decided by a super over. Basil Thampi picked up 3 wickets for 29 in his 4 overs for GL.

In the super over, Mumbai Indians batted first and did well to score 11 runs in first 3 balls. However, James Faulkner did wonder by picking two wickets in the next two deliveries to contain MI to a score of 11. Chasing 12 in the super over, Aaron Finch and Brendon McCullum could not handle the excellence of Jasprit Bumrah. Gujarat Lions could manage only 6 runs and lost the super over by 5 runs. Krunal Pandya was awarded man of the match for his excellent all-round display.
