Following the footsteps of his statesman Ravichandran Ashwin, Washington Sundar also started as a batsman before making his name as a handy off-spinner. He got his breakthough when he was selected to play for the Rising Pune Supergiant in the 2017 edition of IPL after being named as the replacement for Ravichandran Ashwin who was nursing a fingure injury at that time. His most remarkable performance came in the first qualifier against Mumbai Indians when he scalped 3 wickets which helped the Pune franchise reach the final. Later that year in December he made his debut for India in a home series against Sri Lanka in the limited overs format.
His father is a Ranji Level cricketer and he wanted his son to play for India one day. His father had a godfather Mr. Washington, who used to help him financially for his schooling and cricket goods. Therefore, the former was named by his father as Washington in order to pay tribute to latter’s godfather.
