Post India’s win in the T20 World Cup; Board of Control for Cricket in India announced the commencement of franchise-based T20 competition to be played between 7 Indian cities and 7 Indian states. The tournament was named as Indian Premier League.
In the year 2008, first auction was held with the total base prices of the franchises being 400 million. At the end of the auction 8 teams were formed based in Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Jaipur and Mohali.
Mumbai Indians is the most successful team with 5 IPL trophies whereas Chennai Super Kings has won four IPL titles.
The performance of the teams, choice of players, marketing, size of home market have together determined the popularity of the teams in the 12-year history of the game, and will continue in IPL 2023.
