Incidentally, West Indies have not picked all-rounder Kyle Mayers for the first Test match against India to be played at the Windsor Park in Roseau, Dominica beginning from 12 July, 2023. West Indies will be starting their World Test Championship (WTC) Cycle 2023 – 2025 with this opening Test match against India. The West Indies side has not been in the best of forms especially in Test cricket during the recent while as they have won a single Test match against Zimbabwe out of their previous 5 Tests.
West Indies will be taking the field without their star player Kyle Mayers in the WI playing XI for the WI vs IND 1st Test match starting from Wednesday in Dominica. The left-handed batsman was part of the national team during the last Test series in South Africa, but due to some injury concerns, he has not been included in the West Indies squad for the first Test match against India. The Windies lead selector Desmond Haynes revealed that the southpaw has some niggles and thus, is out as a precautionary measure. Mayers has played a total of 18 Test matches for West Indies having scored 949 runs at an average of 32.72 that includes a couple of hundreds and fifties each.
Moreover, he also smashed a remarkable double century during the record successful fourth innings run-chase against Bangladesh.
“We had Jayden Seales here in the camp and he has made good progress during his rehab from surgery. However, we felt he is not yet quite ready to return, and we don’t want to risk him at this stage. Kyle Mayers was also considered but he has some niggles, and the precaution is not to have him in the rigors of a five-day match at this stage,” lead selector Desmond Haynes said.
