The Gujarat Titans, who are yet to register a win this season of the Tata IPL, have received a massive boost ahead of their away clash against the Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. GT’s skipper, Shubman Gill, has been given the green signal for this all-important fixture. Gill missed GT’s previous fixture due to a neck spasm at home against the Rajasthan Royals, which they lost by 6 runs. In Gill’s absence, Afghanistan skipper Rashid Khan led the team.
The Titans succumbed to their second defeat of the season, the other night at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, against the inaugural champions Rajasthan Royals. That was GT’s second defeat of the season in as many games, which has pushed them down to the 9th spot on the points table with their winnings column still empty.
Chasing a mammoth total of 210, GT rode on Sai Sudharsan’s composed 73 off 44 deliveries, but failed to score 10 off the last over bowled by Tushar Deshpande. Sudharsan was the lone warrior with the bat, and a little bit of lower-order assistance was provided by Kagiso Rabada and stand-in skipper Rashid Khan. However, it wasn’t enough to bail out GT from yet another loss in the Tata IPL 2026.
Ahead of the game against DC at the nation’s capital, Gill’s opening partner, B Sai Sudharsan, told the Hindustan Times that Shubman will be playing against the Capitals.
“Shubman is super, he will be playing tomorrow,” Sudharsan was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.
Delhi Capitals’ bowling coach Munaf Patel also acknowledged Gill’s importance, remarking that his absence would have been “some relief” for DC’s bowlers. With Gill back, the Capitals’ attack will have to contend with one of India’s most technically sound and aggressive batters.
“Shubman is a very big player. He is also the captain of his team. He is a good player. He is young. So obviously, it has an impact – bowlers have some relief if he does not play,” said Patel.
Gill’s availability is crucial for several reasons:
The clash at the Arun Jaitley Stadium is pivotal for both sides. Delhi Capitals, buoyed by home advantage, are keen to consolidate their position in the points table and will be eyeing a hattrick of wins. Gujarat Titans, meanwhile, are desperate to register their first victory of the season.
The contest promises to be a battle of contrasting strengths: DC’s spin attack led by Kuldeep Yadav against GT’s top 3 in the batting unit, now reinforced by Gill. Pathum Nissanka’s explosive batting and KL Rahul’s calmness at the top add further intrigue to the Capitals’ challenge, and not to forget the golden boy Sameer Rizvi, who has been spitting fire with the bat this season.
With Gill back, Gujarat Titans are expected to field a more settled batting order. The opening partnership of Gill and Sudharsan will be key to setting the tone, while Rashid Khan’s all‑round skills remain central to their plans. However, their biggest concern is the middle order, which looks clueless. The likes of Washington, Shahrukh, and Tewatia have to step up at any cost to pose a threat to the hosts.
Delhi Capitals, however, will look to exploit home conditions and rely on their spinners to counter GT’s batting strength. The match is crucial for the Titans, who are chasing their first win of the season. If GT’s openers can provide a solid start, their chances of breaking their winless streak improve significantly. Conversely, early wickets for DC could tilt the contest in their favor.
