Sunrisers Hyderabad have received a major boost in the form of their skipper, Pat Cummins. The right-arm pacer has been cleared to join the 2016 champions following his latest back scans in Sydney. He is expected to join the team in late April.
Cummins was in the SRH camp at the start of the tournament, carrying a lower back stress injury. He then returned to Australia to get his scans done, which restrained him from donning the Aussie jersey since last July. With the scan results coming out positive, Cummins will now return to India soon and will be available to feature for SRH from late April.
Cummins had been sidelined since late 2025 due to a recurring back issue, missing Australia’s home season and the early stages of IPL 2026. His rehabilitation program in Sydney was closely monitored by Cricket Australia’s medical staff, and the latest scans revealed no lingering concerns. This clearance is a significant relief for SRH, who invested as many as INR 18 crore to acquire Pat Cummins’ services for the IPL.
The Australian pacer has played only one professional game since August 2025, i.e., the 3rd Ashes Test against England at the Adelaide Oval, making his comeback a crucial moment not just for SRH but also for his long-term international commitments. His workload management will remain a priority, with SRH expected to ease him back into action rather than rushing his return.
In the absence of Pat Cummins, Ishan Kishan has been leading the Sunrisers. So far, the team has had a mixed sort of performance, having won 2 and lost 3 out of 5 games. The Sunrisers have played with only three overseas players in the last two games and are fresh after taming the undefeated, high-flying Rajasthan Royals.
Whenever Pat Cummins is available for SRH, he will be leading the side, taking the reins from Ishan Kishan, but is it really required? With an Indian captain, SRH has an opportunity to shuffle their overseas players. Let’s be honest, Cummins isn’t a proficient T20 player. He had a terrible IPL 2025 for SRH, with the ball going at an economy of around 10.00. Also, as a leader, he failed to take his team to the playoffs, despite having one of the most explosive batting lineups in the tournament.
Cummins is returning from a recurring injury that has troubled him in the past. If the injury recurs, Cummins will have to sit out, and Ishan will be reappointed as skipper, which could hinder the team’s momentum. Therefore, Ishan Kishan continuing as the skipper of Sunrisers Hyderabad for this season won’t be a bad idea.
