The Royal Challengers Bengaluru won their second consecutive title on Sunday night at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. After the win, RCB players were seen celebrating the night on the ground; however, in doing so, RCB’s Aussie recruit Tim David landed in major trouble with the cricket bosses. The IPL organizing committee has declared a hefty fine and a one-match ban on Tim David, which will apply to him in RCB’s first game of the 2027 IPL season. But why has this fine been imposed on the big Australian? Here’s what you need to know.

What Did Tim David Do?

The drama unfolded during the 10th over of the second innings when the Royal Challengers Bengaluru were in pursuit of the chase. England’s Jordan Cox, who was fielding as a substitute, took a close catch of Washington Sundar. The on-field umpires doubted over the cleanliness of the catch and went on to ask the TV umpire to check with the help of video replays.

After taking a close look at the catch with different camera angles, the third umpire gave the verdict of ‘Not Out,’ leaving Tim David furious, who was sitting near the team boundary bench. The Aussie lost his temper and aggressively threw an ice bag toward the on-field umpire, Nitin Menon.

Even though the bag didn’t hit Menon directly, throwing things at a match official is strictly against the cricket laws. The organizers called it a violation of Article 2.9 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which stops players from dangerously throwing equipment or any kind of objects at umpires, players, or fans.

What Punishments and Penalties Were Imposed on Tim David?

Decorated former Indian pacer Javagal Srinath, who was the match referee in the IPL final, met David after the game and handed him the following punishments:

  • 50% Match Fee Fine: David has to give up half of his earnings from the final match.
  • 2 Demerit Points: Think of these as “bad behavior points” added to a player’s official record.

In the IPL, penalty points are associated with a player for the entire season. David actually has been the center of punishments this season, as this was the third instance when he broke a rule.

  • Match 20: He got 1 point for a minor rule break.
  • Match 54: He got 2 points for another incident vs KKR.
  • The Final: He got 2 points for throwing the ice bag vs GT.

On three instances, Tim earned 5 penalty points in total, which triggered a one-match ban for him in the next season. According to IPL rules, the moment a player hits 5 penalty points, they are automatically banned for one game. Since RCB had no matches left, the ban moves to the first match of the Tata IPL 2027.

This ban will be served only in the IPL, not in any other international, domestic, or franchise game Tim plays next. Even if RCB releases him ahead of the next season, whichever teams he plays for in the IPL next, Tim won’t be allowed to feature in their first fixture of the season.

How Tim David fared in Tata IPL 2026

Tim David had a late impact this IPL season playing for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru. He batted in 15 innings but could face only 162 balls. However, he made a lasting impact as the finisher, scoring 305 runs at an average of almost 34 and striking at a brilliant rate of 188.28. Tim scored a solitary fifty this season (an unbeaten 70 off 25 balls) against the 5-time champions Chennai Super Kings at his home ground, i.e., the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. The big Australian made a much-needed contribution in the final as well, forging a crucial 41-run stand with Virat Kohli after the Rajat Patidar-led side found themselves in some sort of trouble, losing 4 wickets in quick succession.
