The next season of the Tata IPL is almost a year away, and we’ve got the biggest news around the same. A blockbuster trade has been accomplished between the Delhi Capitals and Lucknow Super Giants ahead of the IPL 2027 involving Rishabh Pant and Kuldeep Yadav. The two stalwarts of Indian cricket have switched sides in a record-breaking trade that sees left-arm chinaman Kuldeep Yadav moving to LSG from DC, whereas wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant is heading to his original franchise, DC, from LSG.

This multi-crore player swap instantly registers as one of the most significant trades in IPL history, not only due to the stature of the players involved but also because of the massive financial sacrifices made to seal the deal.

IPL 2027 Trade: Rishabh Pant takes a massive pay cut to return to the Delhi Capitals

The primary roadblock to any potential trade involving Rishabh Pant was his historic price tag. At the IPL 2025 mega auction, LSG had acquired Pant for a record-breaking ₹27 crore, making him the most expensive buy in the history of the league. Absorbing a contract of that magnitude without destroying a franchise’s remaining purse structure is an absolute mathematical nightmare for any team.

To facilitate his “Ghar Wapsi” (homecoming), Pant agreed to take a staggering 44% salary cut. He returns to Delhi Capitals at a revised fee of ₹15 crore, relinquishing ₹12 crore from his previous contract to push the trade through. This financial flexibility allowed DC to initiate the deal without compromising their squad depth for the upcoming season.

On the other side of the trade, Kuldeep Yadav moves to Lucknow Super Giants at his existing retention salary of ₹13.50 crore, meaning LSG inherits a world-class spinner while freeing up significant financial breathing room in their overall purse.

Homecoming of sorts for both Indian stars

This trade functions as a structural homecoming for both cricketers, aligning them closer with their domestic roots:

  • Rishabh Pant (Back to DC): Originally from Uttarakhand, Pant played all his domestic cricket for Delhi. He spent nine uninterrupted seasons with Delhi Capitals between 2016 and 2024, playing 111 matches, the most by any single player for the franchise. He also captained the side in 43 matches before parting ways ahead of the 2025 auction due to management differences. With JSW and Parth Jindal taking full operational control of DC for the next two years, bringing back their most recognizable talisman became a top priority.
  • Kuldeep Yadav (To LSG): Kuldeep, who plays his domestic cricket for Uttar Pradesh, will now finally represent his home-state IPL franchise. After reviving his T20 career during a stellar 5-season stint with Delhi Capitals (where he claimed 72 wickets in 65 matches), Kuldeep arrives in Lucknow as their absolute leader of the spin bowling department.

For Delhi Capitals, adding Pant instantly solves their fragile middle-order issues and gives them an elite, experienced Indian wicketkeeper-batter who can bat anywhere in the middle order from 3 to 5. While losing a match-winning spinner like Kuldeep is a heavy blow, DC’s spin department remains highly competent, with current skipper Axar Patel leading the charge. Furthermore, rumors suggest that DC is pairing this player trade with a massive coaching overhaul, with Indian legend Yuvraj Singh heavily linked to join Sourav Ganguly on the DC management staff.

Meanwhile, the Lucknow Super Giants secure exactly what they lacked: an elite, defensive yet attacking Indian spinner. The slower, spin-friendly tracks during the mid-season in the IPL will serve as the perfect playground for Kuldeep Yadav’s left-arm wrist spin, giving LSG a massive home-advantage boost.

This trade is no less than the trade involving the former champions Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals. The Royals gave away their skipper, Sanju Samson, to CSK ahead of the Tata IPL 2026 season and in return bought the all-round duo of Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran.
