The 5-time IPL champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are standing on the verge of a completely new era. In a decision that marks the end of an era in franchise cricket, CSK officially announced the mutual departure of their legendary head coach, Stephen Fleming. His exit effectively dissolves one of the most stable and decorated, team-coach partnerships in the global T20 landscape.
However, as the Super Kings face a massive structural transition, the franchise is turning to its most reliable anchor. Explosive media reports have revealed that Chennai Super Kings are planning to entrust former skipper MS Dhoni with a significantly expanded, all-encompassing role inside the organization’s backend operations.

Stephen Fleming’s departure comes on the heels of immense competitive frustration. The former New Zealand captain originally joined the Yellow Army as a top-order batsman in the inaugural 2008 season before transitioning seamlessly into the head coach position in 2009. Over his astonishing 18-year association, Fleming established a golden standard: five IPL trophies, two Champions League T20 crowns, 10 final appearances, and 12 playoff qualifications.
The baseline, however, cracked heavily over the last two cycles. The franchise finished at the very bottom of the league table in IPL 2025, followed closely by another highly disappointing campaign in 2026, where they failed to reach the playoffs for the second consecutive season. Recognizing the immediate need for a clean slate, the management has initiated a total overhaul.
According to a comprehensive report by RevSportz, MS Dhoni is central to this upcoming structural shift. The franchise is actively planning to hand Dhoni the official title of team mentor, alongside being a player and taking absolute control over the franchise’s sporting decisions.
Dhoni did not feature on the playing turf during the IPL 2026 cycle due to a severe, persistent injury. With Fleming out of the equation, the management wants Dhoni to dictate the direction of their incoming leadership.
The report states:
“Dhoni is expected to play a major role in identifying and appointing Chennai Super Kings’ next head coach.”
Furthermore, the source detailed that while it remains open to interpretation whether he officially takes the mentor’s badge before the IPL 2027 season or a little later, the ultimate power layout is set. The report notes:
“Dhoni could be handed complete control of the franchise’s cricket-related affairs as CSK look to rebuild after two disappointing seasons.”
Stepping into Stephen Fleming’s shoes is arguably the most daunting task in contemporary domestic T20 cricket. While the franchise has maintained absolute radio silence and no official confirmations have been made by either the CSK board or Dhoni himself, the rumor mill has thrown up massive names.
Prominent figures like former Indian head coach Rahul Dravid, Australian icon Michael Clarke, Team India’s current assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate, and domestic veteran Hemang Badani have already been heavily linked to the vacant dugout slot.
No matter who becomes the head coach, one thing is clear: the new coach will work directly under the supervision of Dhoni, who is expected to be CSK’s sporting director. By placing all cricket operations under his leadership, CSK is relying on Dhoni’s tactical knowledge to guide them through the upcoming mega-auction and restore Chennai’s strong performance.
