The latest update to the ICC ODI Rankings (men’s batters) has seen significant movement following the conclusion of the three-match bilateral ODI series between England and India. Despite India suffering a 1-2 series defeat on English soil, Indian batting stalwarts Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma have maintained a firm grip at the peak of the international standings, while England veteran Joe Root made a thunderous return to the top ten.
Indian Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill continues to hold the No. 2 spot in the world, sitting right on the heels of New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell, who remains the world’s top-ranked ODI batter with 802 rating points. Gill, who compiled 188 runs across the three matches against England, has closed the distance dramatically and now sits just a single rating point behind Mitchell at 801 points.
Meanwhile, India’s modern-day master, the legendary Virat Kohli, retained his No. 3 ranking with 767 rating points. Right behind him, veteran opener Rohit Sharma made massive strides to close the gap on his teammate. Fresh off a valiant 138-run knock at Lord’s in the 3rd ODI, Rohit remains comfortably in 4th place with 758 rating points, narrowing the distance between himself and Kohli to just nine points.
The biggest headline maker in the latest rankings update is England’s veteran right-hander, Joe Root. The 35-year-old produced a masterclass in consistency throughout the series, finishing as the Player of the Series after amassing 249 runs without being dismissed a single time across all three games (76*, 99*, and 74*).
Root’s staggering run of form propelled him up four places to 8th position in the ODI batting rankings. This marks Root’s first appearance in the ICC ODI top 10 since 2020, underlining his timeless class in 50-over cricket.
Among other notable movers, England opener Ben Duckett jumped 11 spots to joint-19th after his record-breaking 141 at Lord’s, while India’s middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer gained two slots to reach 13th place.
