Rumors are making the rounds that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly considering legendary Indian batter VVS Laxman for the role of Senior Selection Committee chairman. The current chairman, Ajit Agarkar’s initial contract officially expired in June 2026, but he received a temporary three-month extension through September 2026. However, it is widely expected that BCCI may offer Agarkar a long-term renewal leading up to the ever-so-crucial Cricket World Cup 2027.
The recent internal controversies and communication breakdowns have put Ajit Agarkar’s continuation in jeopardy. The primary catalyst behind the potential overhaul in the selection committee is the growing friction between Agarkar and the former Indian skipper Rohit Sharma. Although both are from Mumbai, there’s something weird going on between the two.
Reports emerged indicating that the Agarkar-led committee had held formal discussions with head coach Gautam Gambhir regarding phasing out the veteran opening batter following the bilateral series against England. To make the claims even more credible, many media leaks claimed that the third ODI between India and England at Lord’s could be Rohit’s final appearance wearing the Indian jersey. However, Rohit responded to the criticism on the pitch by scoring a resilient century at Lord’s.
The incident forced BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia to issue an official public statement countering the narrative. Clarifying the board’s stance, Saikia stated:
“No decision has been made to force the veteran out.”
The stark contrast between public statements and internal selection discussions has reportedly created a significant gap between selectors, board administrators, and the playing group.
VVS Laxman has emerged as the potential candidate to replace Agarkar. As per media reports, BCCI is keen on appointing a chief selector who is well respected across all levels of cricket in India and around the globe. VVS Laxman, who currently serves as the Head of Cricket at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, has earned high praise for his administrative development and has taken the interim head coach responsibility of the Indian team whenever Gautam Gambhir is given a break.
VVS is considered someone who could ensure better authority in managing senior stars. Discussing the strategic shift under consideration, a report highlighted:
“BCCI officials reportedly believe Laxman’s views would command greater respect from senior players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.”
Laxman’s potential transition to chief selector would provide the panel with seasoned expertise, structural stability, and a clear vision as Team India prepares for major ICC events.
