In a troubling turn of events, veteran Sri Lankan batter Dinesh Chandimal was rushed to the hospital for precautionary scans after sustaining a shoulder and neck injury while saving a boundary on Day 4 of the Sri Lanka vs India Test match at the Galle International Stadium in Galle.

The incident took place early on the fourth day when Indian vice-captain KL Rahul played a shot on the leg side. The ball was travelling to the fence, but Dinesh wasn’t ready to give up on a chase. He sprinted from the deep mid-wicket toward the deep square leg to prevent the boundary and threw himself horizontally to stop the ball. Although he successfully saved two runs for his team, his landing turned into a terrifying moment.

Dinesh Chandimal’s freak fall at the boundary

As Chandimal completed his dive across the boundary cushion, his momentum caused him to tumble awkwardly over his head. His upper body distorted upon landing, placing immense force directly onto his right shoulder, neck, and head. The 36-year-old remained lying on the turf beyond the boundary rope in visible distress, unable to get up immediately.

Teammates quickly gathered around him, signaling for urgent medical assistance. Sri Lanka’s team doctor and physiotherapist rushed onto the field to evaluate him on the spot. Chandimal was seen clutching his right shoulder and the back of his neck while receiving treatment.

Although he managed to stand up and gingerly walk back to the dressing room under his own power, he was clearly in severe pain. Pasindu Sooriyabandara came onto the field as a substitute fielder to replace him. Shortly after returning to the pavilion, medical staff determined that Chandimal needed to be taken to a local hospital in Galle for detailed precautionary imaging scans.

Will Chandimal bat in the second innings?

The ongoing game is quickly getting away from the hosts’ grasp. India’s lead is already above 350 at the time of writing, and Sri Lanka would want Chandimal to be available to bat in the second innings. Although he scored only 4 in the first innings, Chandimal’s services will be utterly required in the second innings when Sri Lankan batters will be out on the field to save the game.

If scan results reveal a serious issue or signs of concussion from the impact, Sri Lanka may have to seek a concussion replacement or proceed without one of their finest Test players for the remainder of the match. Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) and their fans now await an official update regarding his scan results and recovery timeline.
