In a landmark shift, the five-time IPL champions, Chennai Super Kings, announced former Indian paceman Zaheer Khan as their new head coach for the upcoming 2027 IPL season. The former Indian pacer has taken over the reins from former New Zealand skipper Stephen Fleming, who served as the head coach of the Super Kings for 16 long years. Zaheer has been appointed the head coach for IPL 2027 only, but his contract could be expanded in the future depending on the team’s performance in the next season.

Coming off a tough 2026 campaign where the 5-time champions finished eighth and missed the playoffs for the third consecutive year, the franchise is entering a critical rebuilding phase with Zaheer Khan as the head coach. It is believed that the call to bring Zaheer on board was spearheaded by MS Dhoni himself. Zaheer and Dhoni’s partnership dates back to India’s historic 2011 World Cup triumph, where Zaheer functioned as Dhoni’s unofficial “bowling captain” on the field.
Dhoni once referred to the legendary left-armer as the “Sachin Tendulkar of the bowling attack,” trusting his intuition for field settings and tactical acumen in bowling changes. CSK’s core culture relies on calm, understated leadership and clear communication. Zaheer shares that exact operational frequency, ensuring an effortless alignment with both Dhoni and CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad in the dressing room.
With Zaheer at the helm, Chennai’s pace bowling department is under a brilliant guide. While Chennai’s historical dominance at Chepauk was built on a spin-choke strategy, recent seasons exposed major weaknesses in their pace department and death-overs execution on away tracks. Zaheer brings vast administrative and coaching experience across IPL franchises to the table. His portfolio is enigmatic, as he has served as Director of Cricket Operations and Global Head of Development at Mumbai Indians between 2018 and 2022, followed by a stint as mentor for the Lucknow Super Giants.
Expressing his delight at joining the franchise, Zaheer stated:
“It’s an honour to be a part of one of the most successful teams in the history of the IPL. As a cricketer, I have faced CSK on the field and have thoroughly enjoyed the contests. The atmosphere created by the Superfans at Chepauk makes it even more special.”
Having agreed to a single-year contract initially, Zaheer’s immediate mandate involves navigating player retentions and structuring a competitive squad to steer CSK back into playoff contention. The five-time champions couldn’t have got a better experienced and influential Indian figure to coach their team and reclaim their legacy in this tough rebuilding phase.
