Former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly has been officially appointed as the head coach of Delhi Capitals ahead of the IPL 2027 season. The 54-year-old Indian cricket legend takes over from Hemang Badani, who served in the same capacity in the last two seasons. Under Badani’s tenure, the Capitals failed to reach the playoffs on both occasions.

Talking about Ganguly’s connection with the franchise, one has to say that it is far from new. His journey with the franchise began back in 2019 when he joined as a team advisor. Over the years, “Dada” has worn multiple hats within the setup, serving as the Director of Cricket for both the men’s and women’s teams, as well as the head coach of the Pretoria Capitals, Delhi Capitals’ sister franchise, in South Africa’s SA20 league.

The reign of Sourav Ganguly begins for the Delhi Capitals

Delhi Capitals are co-owned by the Jindal Steel Works (JSW Group) and the GMR Group, who operate the franchise on a biennial management system. The GMR Group managed the team in the last two years; it’s now time for the JSW Group to take over for the next two years, i.e., 2027 and 2028.

Expressing his enthusiasm about taking on the new responsibility, Sourav Ganguly shared:

“I am looking forward to take on the role of Head Coach in the IPL. Delhi Capitals is a franchise very close to my heart, and one that I have shared a strong relationship with over the years.”

“I have worked closely with the owners, management, support staff and players, which makes this an exciting responsibility for me. We have a talented group and have played a good brand of cricket in the recent past.”

“I am looking forward to working with the squad, the new season, and building a strong and fearless team.”

DC’s chairman & co-owner, Parth Jindal, the founder of JSW Sports, expressed great pride in bringing one of India’s talismanic cricketers on board as the head coach.

“Dada is and has always been an integral part of the Delhi Capitals family. I am incredibly proud and honoured to announce that one of the greatest Indian captains and administrators is now stepping into coaching by taking over as the head coach of the Delhi Capitals.”

“I am excited to see him take on this role and I’m sure that under his guidance and visionary leadership Delhi Capitals will be best prepared to challenge for the IPL title.”

Yuvraj Singh Likely to be the batting coach

Not only Sourav, but Delhi Capitals’ coaching setup is expected to be graced by yet another former Indian legend, Yuvraj Singh. Rumors suggest that the stylish former Indian left-hand batter is expected to take the batting coach role in Sourav Ganguly’s-led coaching setup.

If finalized, Yuvraj will bring tons of experience alongside Ganguly, and the two Indian legends would reunite. Known for his explosive left-handed batting and fearless mindset, Yuvraj’s potential inclusion could bring crucial tactical depth and aggressive intent to Delhi Capitals’ top and middle-order batters as they aim to target their maiden IPL trophy.
