Newly appointed Mumbai Indians’ head coach Kieron Pollard has decided to withdraw from playing commitments with the Joburg Super Kings (JSK) for the forthcoming SA20 season. The decision comes immediately on the heels of the former West Indies all-rounder’s appointment as the head coach of IPL’s 5-time champions, Mumbai Indians, for the 2027 season, replacing Mahela Jayawardene.

Pollard was secured by Chennai Super Kings’ sister franchise, Joburg Super Kings, for R1.5 million (approximately ₹85 lakh) for the 2027 edition of South Africa’s premier T20 franchise league tournament SA20. The purchase generated substantial buzz across the franchise circuit, as it was slated to mark the very first instance of the Trinidadian icon representing a franchise not affiliated with the Reliance-owned Mumbai Indians ecosystem in a league where an MI-owned entity operates.

Kieron Pollard Opted to Maintain Franchise Loyalty

Having spent his entire IPL playing and coaching career with the Mumbai Indians and MI’s global teams like MI Emirates, MI London, and MI Cape Town, Pollard’s potential appearance in Super Kings colors created a unique situation, along with a stir among the fans. Turning out as an active player for a rival franchise’s sister team while holding the top coaching position at Mumbai Indians would have presented an awkward dynamic.

To avoid any potential friction or split focus ahead of his inaugural head coaching assignment in the IPL for the 5-time champions, Pollard officially communicated his decision to step down from the JSK squad.

Addressing the development, Chennai Super Kings’ and Super Kings’ franchises’ Chief Executive Officer Kasi Viswanathan confirmed receiving the communication from the veteran all-rounder.

“He has conveyed to us that he will not be able to play for Joburg Super Kings. We will now look for a replacement,” confirmed Kasi Viswanathan, CEO of CSK and all Super Kings franchises.

Despite speculations that the Mumbai Indians management might have intervened in Pollard’s call to withdraw from SA20, sources close to the MI setup clarified that it was the all-rounder’s standalone decision to not play for the Joburg Super Kings in SA20 2027.

“It’s up to KP on the matter. We have given no instructions,” an MI source told Cricbuzz.

Pollard has previously featured in the South African T20 league, representing MI Cape Town over the last two seasons, playing 12 games and scoring 207 runs. When MI Cape Town opted not to bid for Pollard during the recent draft, instead securing fellow West Indian power hitter Shimron Hetmyer, Joburg Super Kings seized the opportunity to add the legendary white-ball finisher to their roster.

Focus Shifts to IPL 2027 Preparation

With Pollard stepping back from his SA20 duties, Joburg Super Kings will seek a replacement from outside the auction pool. Meanwhile, Pollard turns his complete attention to his new role with his beloved franchise, Mumbai Indians. He served as the batting coach last season for the 5-time champions and will be leading the team’s backroom operations. As one of the most respected figures in modern white-ball cricket, his transition from batting coach to head coach represents a central element of Mumbai Indians’ strategy to capture their sixth IPL title in 2027.
