Pitching in the ninth innings of a baseball game is arguably a tough assignment for any player. More often than not, the last inning is clutch. That’s when the game is decided. Every team has a few players who have the speciality in closing the game down off the mound. And they are given a special name, “Closer”, or more commonly known as the “relief pitcher”. Cincinnati Reds boss David Bell never named a closer for the ongoing 2021 MLB season, but Heath Hembree can be considered as a close thing to being the go-to relief pitcher up until now. After all, 15 of his 16 appearances as a relief pitcher came in the ninth innings. But that tag might be unofficially off of Hembree’s head after he capitulated under pressure, giving away a three-run homer to Jorge Polanco in the ninth innings of Reds’ 5-7 defeat at the hands of Minnesota Twins.
“We’ve really never designated certain pitchers to certain innings,” Bell said. “We’ll continue to do what’s best each and every game depending on the opposing lineup and where our guys are – their rest and all kinds of different factors, which we’ll take into consideration. The main thing is we’re getting healthy. We’re getting guys back,” David Bell after the 5-7 defeat against the Twins.
Reds and Twins are currently locked up in a two-game tilt and the final contest of this series is scheduled for a 10:05 PM (IST) start at Great American Ball Park on Wednesday night.
