Oakland Athletics and the San Diego Padres played two games last week, with the series splitting as each team won once. Their latest series is also a two-game affair and the Athletics must raise their game in order to save the pride. The first game was straightforward in every way possible. Eight of the nine Padres players had hits, led by Austin Nola who had four, and two RBIs to add to his efforts, while Tommy Pham hit a leadoff homer as the Padres bulldozed the Athletics 8-1. Manny Machado joined the party with two hits resulting in two runs. Padres were so good one may forget that their superstar shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. was not in the line-up due to an injury. But the offence was off the chart against an average Athletics team.
“Up and down the lineup the guys just didn’t try to do too much,” said Padres manager Jayce Tingler.“Stayed in the middle of the field and tried to stay on top of that heater. With Tommy setting the tone in the first and some big two-out hits in the second, that was huge. Really good night offensively.”
