Former Indian cricketer Anjum Chopra is confident that Indian team will deliver a powerful performance in the upcoming women’s World T20. However, she believes that the favorites for this ICC event are the defending champions Windies who are also the hosts for this tournament.

Chopra believes all-rounders and home advantage make Windies favorites

In a column written for ICC’s website, the former India cricketer stated that the Windies women, the defending champions, will be playing in home conditions and will start as favorites.

She noted that, with the top two all-rounders in the world in Stafanie Taylor and Hayley Mathews backed by number-four Deandra Dottin, the opportunity lies for them to replicate their success in India in 2016.

A challenging tournament for India: Chopra

Chopra also wrote about India’s chances in this ICC event. She feels that with teams like England, Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand also in the mix, for India, the tournament is undoubtedly a challenging one.

She feels that Harmanpreet Kaur is up for the challenge both as a captain and as a player. According to Chopra, Kaur has garnered a lot of experience and success since the last time she played in the ICC Women’s World T20 in India.

She reckons that spin can be a huge weapon in the West Indies and feels that with coach Ramesh Powar at the helm, the possibility of a strong performance by the Indian team is very much on the cards. The cricketer turned commentator noted that a former India off-spinner, Ramesh Powar has enough experience to guide the promising women’s team.

She also pointed out that after the success of the ICC Women’s World Cup 2017 in England, especially in terms of the audience, the stand-alone women’s world T20 seems the right step for the development of the women’s game.
