England announce World Cup 2019 squad; Archer still on hold

By Chaitanya Laxman

The England team management has named the England squad of 15 players that will participate in the ICC World Cup 2019. Jofra Archer doesn’t feature in this squad but the selectors have made it clear that the pace bowler can still make it to the final squad if he delivers an impressive performance in the upcoming matches.

At the same time the England Cricket Board has announced the squad for the series against Pakistan and Ireland.

Denly in as England rely on core players

The selectors have shown faith in the core players by naming an unchanged squad for the iconic ODI tournament.

But they have also included Joe Denly in the squad as a spin bowling option. Denly last played ODI cricket in 2009.

Archer still in the race

Ed Smith, England’s national selector said that the selection panel would like to give Jofra Archer the opportunity to stake a claim for the final World Cup squad, which will be announced in a little over a month.

He noted that as soon as Jofra became available, they discussed whether they would select him in squads … as soon as he became available, they have given him the opportunity.

Smith explained that in line with ICC regulations, they have to name a preliminary squad of 15 for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup before April 23.

However he added that all 17 players named in the Royal London ODIs against Pakistan can stake a claim to be in the final 15-man squad, finalised at the end of that series.
