This was what everyone wanted. The last ball finish, keeping the fans and the administers glued till the end. There were brilliant moments by Shane Watson and Jasprit Bumrah and there was sloppy work to. It was a final that had it all. And in the end with two runs to win from one ball, Lasith Malinga nailed a slower yorker to perfection, trapping Shardul Thaukur in front of wickets and winning Mumbai Indians their fourth IPL title.

Mumbai score 149 in 20 overs

Batting first, Quinton de Kock (29 off 17 balls) gave Mumbai a quick start but CSK fought back sending back de Kock and Rohit Sharma in successive overs. Then Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan were tied down by some superb bowling.

Mumbai expected Hardik Pandya to give the lift in the finishing overs but Deepak Chahar removed him in a brilliant penultimate over and then it was Kieron Pollard’s feisty 41 off 25 balls which included two fours of the last two balls of the innings, that pushed Mumbai to 149 off 20 overs.

Mumbai peg back CSK in chase

CSK got off to a blazing start as Faf du Plessis (26 off 13 balls) began the onslaught but Krunal Pandya removed him in the 4th over. Then, Raina and Rayudu’s poor run in IPL 2019 continued as CSK tottered at 3 down for 73 runs.

At that moment all hopes were on MS Dhoni, however, he tried to steal second run on a misfield and Ishan Kishan ran him out with his bat just millimeters away from the crease in the 13th over. Rahul Chahar gave just 14 runs in his 4 overs and pegged back MI in the contest.

Shane Watson rises but Bumrah gives Mumbai edge

It seemed all doomed for CSK but Shane Watson once again proved his class and the fact that he was dropped thrice helped his cause. With 62 needed off 5 overs, he drilled Malinga for three consecutive fours to bring it back to 42 off 4 overs.

However, Bumrah stepped up and gave just four runs to make it 38 off three overs. Mumbai gambled with Krunal and it backfired as Watson clobbered three back to back sixes.

Bumrah once again kept Mumbai in the game by turning the equation from 19 off 12 balls to 13 off seven balls. But de Kock missed a regulation collection on the last ball to gift CSK four byes and CSK needed 9 off 6 balls.

Malinga then proved his worth by delivering a legendary final over. Watson went for a second run and was run-out on the foruth ball and CSK needed four from 2 balls. Shardul Thakur got a couple on the fifth ball but Malinga roared back with a sensational yorker on the last ball to take Mumbai home in a thriller encounter.
