Indian cricket captain and the current #1 batsman in the world, Virat Kohli will be award the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award this month on September 25th. The spots ministry announced this on Thursday. The Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award is our nation’s highest sporting honour.

The ceremony is to be held at the Rashtrapati Bhawan and the award will be presented by President Ram Nath Kovind. Also included will be a cash prize of Rs. 7.5 Lakhs along with the medal and a citation.
Kohli, who presently is the #1 batsmen in the world according to the ICC ranking has excelled at the sport of cricket in the last few years. His form has been exceptional and his batting has many people comparing him to the great Sachin Tendulkar.

Kohli was nominated for the award in 2016 and 2017 but unfortunately missed out. To his name, captain Kohli has an impressive 6147 run record in 71 Tests. This includes 23 centuries and in 211 ODIs he’s made 9779 runs.
Along with him, weightlifter Saikhom Mirabai Chanu will also be receiving the prestigious award. Chanu who nominated for the award after she won the gold medal in the World Championships in the 48kg category.

Along with that, she won the yellow metal in the Commonwealth Games 2018. She was unable to compete in the Asian Games due to an injury.
