Caribbean cricket’s biggest carnival, CPL 2020 is just around the corner. With the IPL and T20 World Cup still waiting for their chances to get underway, the Caribbean’s biggest cricketing carnival i.e. the fate of CPL T20 2020 also hangs in balance.
The global pandemic has already taken a toll on human lives which and sports which surely include cricket got affected heavily. ‘Postponement’ and ‘Abandonment’ are the two terms that have been associated with all sporting ties around the world in the past 3-4 months.
The Caribbean Premier League will witness its 8th edition in 2020 and the proclaimed dates for the tournament to commence is from 19th August to 26th September. However, with the COVID-19 still the biggest threat looming all over the world, there are speculations that the tournament might witness new dates.
The current situation is not favourable and playing in these adverse conditions means risking the lives of both spectators and players. The CPL authority is in constant communication with both West Indies Cricket Board and medical support staff, and at present, the tournament doesn’t seem to get any new dates.
According to the current scenario, it is still too early to make such decisions and the governing bodies of the tournament are in no rush to take any call as of now.
Just like the last year, six teams will be competing in this edition as well, namely Guyana Amazon Warriors, Jamaica Tallawahs, St Lucia Zouks, Trinbago Knight Riders, St Kitts and Nevis Patriots and the reigning champions Barbados Tridents.
Prior to the season, all teams have let go of many big names and retained a part of their last year’s squad. Underneath, we have mentioned the current squads and their retained players.
The Zouks will be welcoming their icon and veteran performer Darren Sammy back in the mix of things. The supreme all-rounder will once again don the captain’s hat.
Roston Chase, Mohammad Nabi, Daren Sammy, Najibullah Zadran, Andre Fletcher, Kesrick Williams, Scott Kuggeleijn, Chemar Holder, Obed McCoy, Rahkeem Cornwall, Mark Deyal, Zahir Khan, Kimani Melius, Leniko Boucher, Kavem Hodge, Javelle Glen, Saad Bin Zafar.
The defending champions Tridents have retained as many as 9 players, including Test skipper Jason Holder who will once again reprise his role as the skipper of the side.

One of the exciting teams of the last edition were obsolete teams as they finished right at the bottom with only 2 wins. They have retained the least number of players this season, i.e. four. Hard-hitting all-rounder Dre-Russ still remains their star pick.
Andre Russell, Sandeep Lamichhane, Carlos Brathwaite, Rovman Powell, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Glenn Phillips, Chadwick Walton, Oshane Thomas, Asif Ali, Fidel Edwards, Preston McSween, Jermaine Blackwood, Nicholas Kirton, Ramaal Lewis, Nkrumah Bonnar, Veerasammy Permaul, Ryan Persaud.
Patriots displayed great character last season and finished 3rd on the points table. What fate awaits for them this season? Well, it would be too early to answer this. The team has retained as many as 7 individuals.
Chris Lynn, Ben Dunk, Evin Lewis, Nick Kelly, Sohail Tanvir, Ish Sodhi, Sheldon Cottrell, Denesh Ramdin, Rayad Emrit, Imran Khan, Alzarri Joseph, Joshua De Silva, Dominic Drakes, Colin Archibald, Jon Russ Jaggesar, Jahmar Hamilton.
A team that has held their hands on the coveted title for a record three times has made as many as 10 retentions for this season. One between Kieron Pollard or Dwayne Bravo will be leading the side.
Dwayne Bravo, Kieron Pollard, Sunil Narine, Colin Munro, Fawad Ahmed, Darren Bravo, Lendl Simmons, Khary Pierre, Tim Seifert, Sikandar Raza, Anderson Phillip, Pravin Tambe, Jayden Seales, Amir Jangoo, Tion Webster, Akeal Hosein, Muhammad Ali Khan.
A team that remained unbeaten throughout the league stage in the last season has managed to retain ten of their most valuable players. The runners-up of the last season would be inching to get their hands on the coveted trophy which eluded them last season.
Imran Tahir, Nicholas Pooran, Brandon King, Ross Taylor, Shimron Hetmyer, Chris Green, Keemo Paul, Sherfane Rutherford, Romario Shepherd, Naveen-ul-Haq, Chandrapul Hemraj, Kevin Sinclair, Ashmeade Nedd, Odean Smith, Anthony Bramble, Jasdeeo Singh, Kissoondath Magram
