The 17th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is set to begin and the fans are looking forward to high-scoring matches with a lot of boundaries and maximums. Usually, the batters dominate the game in the IPL and the bowlers find it difficult to find their rhythm altogether.
However, there have been instances where the bowlers have dominated the game in both innings and also, didn’t allow the batters to chase the modest totals. In this post, we will take a look at the 5 lowest total defended in IPL history.
In the IPL 2012, Mumbai Indians posted 120/9 in 20 overs after batting first at the MCA, Pune. While Sachin Tendulkar top-scored for Mumbai Indians with 34 runs off 35 deliveries, Bhuvneshwar Kumar bowled a brilliant spell of 2/9 in 4 overs for Pune Warriors India.
Defending the total, Mumbai Indians restricted Pune Warriors India to 119/6 in 20 overs to seal the game by 1 run. Mithun Manhas’ unbeaten 42 runs off 34 deliveries went in vain as Lasith Malinga and Harbhajan Singh picked up two wickets each.
In the IPL 2013, Sunrisers Hyderabad could only muster up 119/8 in 20 overs while batting first against Pune Warriors India. Bhuvneshwar Kumar picked up 3 wickets for 18 runs to restrict the Orange Army.
What followed next was brilliance from Amit Mishra as the leggie picked up 4 wickets for 19 runs to dismantle Pune Warriors India. PWI were dismissed for 108 in 19 overs to surrender the game by 11 runs.
In the IPL 2009, Kings XI Punjab’s batting failed against Mumbai Indians and they could only manage 119/8 in 20 overs. Kumar Sangakkara top-scored with 45 runs, while Lasith Malinga accounted for two wickets.
However, Mumbai Indians’ batting collapsed during the chase despite JP Duminy’s 59 runs off 63 deliveries. They could only manage 116/7 in 20 overs as KXIP sealed the thriller by 3 runs.
In the IPL 2018, Sunrisers Hyderabad failed to get going against Mumbai Indians and posted only 118/10 in 18.4 overs after batting first. Kane Williamson top-scored with 29 runs, while three bowlers picked up two wickets each for Mumbai Indians.
