Asia Cup 2021 : Team India is having a tight schedule for 2021 and with India qualifying for the finals of the World Test Championship, it seems there is no place to add more tournaments in the calendar. And hence, the BCCI may opt to send a second-string team for the Asia Cup, if it happens in 2021.
Initially, the latest edition of the Aisa Cup was supposed to take place in 2020. However, the Covid Pandemic stopped all cricket. There was no cricket for a long period and now as things are coming back to normalcy, cricket boards are facing tough task of fitting in the lost tournaments in their already busy schedule. The Asia cup was supposed to take place in mid-2021.
The BCCI will organize the Indian Premier League in April and May and Team India will then play the WTC finals from 18 to 22 June. India have a Test series planned against England in August which means most players won’t come back after the WTC final.
Having such a tight schedule for 2021 means India have no time in the calendar to play the Asia cup which is not yet finalized. With India playing the WTC finals, the organizers are thinking to push Asia Cup in the last week of June.
Even if that happens, BCCI may not send India’s top players for the tournament as India will be keen to prepare for the Test series against England.
According to a report in an English daily, BCCI is thinking to send a second-string team for the Asia Cup. The likes of V Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, R Pant may miss the Asia Cup.
“There’s no other choice. We can’t risk the preparation for the series in England. And cricketers can’t twice undergo quarantine. If the Asia Cup happens, India will have no option but to send a second-string squad,” the newspaper quoted a BCCI official.
