The Asia Cup 2025 is in its next phase of the competition. After almost 11 days of intense action, we have finally got our top 4 teams who will be going up against each other in the Super 4 stage. From Group A, we have India and Pakistan, whereas from Group B, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh have made their way into the Top 4. The four teams that have been eliminated are Hong Kong, China, Afghanistan, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates.
Let’s break down how the four teams made it to the Super 4 stage.
The first team to make it to the Super 4s was the number-one-ranked T20I side, i.e., Team India. Group A was a fairly easy group to make it among the top 2, as it comprised only two Test-playing nations, i.e., India and Pakistan. The reigning champions kicked off their season campaign with a dominating 9-wicket win over the United Arab Emirates.
The dominance continued over the archrivals, Pakistan, in the following game. Team India romped past their counterparts with a dominating 7-wicket win, a game that unfolded a lot of drama and controversy regarding no handshakes. However, the drama couldn’t hide the humiliation Pakistan went through during the match courtesy of Team India.
With two wins in two games, the Indian team qualified for the Super 4s, and their remaining fixture against Oman was a mere formality, an opportunity to fine-tune combinations, rest key players, and maintain momentum without the pressure of qualification looming over them. Courtesy of their brilliant showing throughout the competition, Team India finished in pole position in Group A.
The second team from Group A, which qualified for the Super 4s, was Pakistan. The Men in Green kicked off their competition with a win over Oman by 93 runs. The Pakistan bowling unit was clinical as they defended 160 by bowling out Oman for a mere 67. Pakistan, however, got humiliated in their following game against India, losing the game by 7 wickets.
After a win and a loss from two games, Pakistan was in a disarray of making it to the next round. Their final league game against the United Arab Emirates was a must-win contest. Both teams gave a cutthroat competition to each other, but in the end it was Pakistan who registered a 41-run victory. Pakistan, with 2 wins in 3 matches, finished second right behind India in Group A to make it to the Super 4s.
Sri Lanka, along with India, was the only other team that remained undefeated in the group stage of Asia Cup 2025. The six-time champions kicked off their tournament campaign with a win against their budding rivals Bangladesh by 6 wickets at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. That was a defining win for the Lankans, as the game never went out of their grasp and they secured a brilliant win.
Sri Lanka’s next game was against Hong Kong, China. Everyone thought that it would be a cakewalk for them, but Hong Kong, China, put up a great fight and took Sri Lanka to the cleaners, but eventually the Lankans held their nerve and secured a 4-wicket win to solidify their position at the top of Group B.
Their final league game came against Afghanistan, and in what looked like a stiff chase for them of 170 runs, Sri Lanka made it without any bumps as they won the game by 6 wickets. Doing so, they didn’t only secure three wins in three games but also eliminated Afghanistan from the Super 4s race.
Bangladesh had a topsy-turvy run in Asia Cup 2025. They started off with a dominating win over Hong Kong, China, by 7 wickets but hit a roadblock soon in their second game against the eventual table toppers, Sri Lanka. Bangladesh lost to Sri Lanka by 6 wickets and found themselves in a precarious state of making it to the next phase of the tournament.
They were next assigned to square off against Afghanistan, an opponent who have had the better of them in the past, particularly in the shortest format of the game. Bangladesh shut their trollers mouth by registering a much-needed 8-run victory over Afghanistan to give themselves a chance of making it to the Super 4 stage. Bangladesh missed out on a Super 4 berth in the last edition but have got it this time around.
