Careers are not on the line: Virat

By Christopher Paul

As captain of the Indian cricket team, Virat Kohli has played 37 test matches so far. Remarkably, he has not played with the same team in any of the matches. He has been seen changing and shuffling his XI. This has led experts to believe that Kohli’s captaincy style is marked by a degree of impatience.  He has also reportedly made it obvious that he will not be trying to save any of his teammates’ careers, as he believes, ” no one can play on forever”.

The situation in England has thrown off everyone a little, but Kohli has assured that his focus is on winning game and not securing careers. Some have argues that this frequent shuffling creates instability and insecurity but to Kohli the idea is “bizarre”.

Kohli had no qualms about accepting that India did indeed “have its back to the wall”. However, he is focused on winning. The two changes for this upcoming test will be Jasprit Bumrah’s return in place of Kuldeep Yadav and Rishabh Pant in place of Dinesh Karthik. Though it is still not understood why Yadav was played in the seaming conditions at Lord’s, Kohli stated that Bumrah, as an aggressive player and attacking bowler would hit the right areas that would help the team.

Coach Ravi Shastri wanted to keep the Pant-Karthik swap under wraps, though it was more of an open secret. Another mystery in this regard is why suddenly, after a good performance, Umesh Yadav found himself out of favour. He took 3-76 at Birmingham, but apparently, that was not good enough for the captain.

It surely has been a struggle for India in England. But the captain is focused on making it work.  According to him, most of the controversial issues are just people creating something out of nothing. Now we must wait and watch if Kohli’s strategy works or not.
