Darren Sammy asks for apology from SRH teammates

Black lives matter. There has been a worldwide protest against racism due to the death of George Floyd at the hands of American white police officer. All over the world people have echoed the views of the protesters in America and are united against racism. Football as a sport has experienced a lot of racist abuse among players but cricket is no different. The incident between Harbhajan Singh and Andrew Symonds springs up to mind when speaking about racism.

Darren Sammy demands apology

Darren Sammy has found out the fact that he was also a victim of casual racism when he was with the Sunrisers Hyderabad squad during his IPL stint in 2013-14. “I was listening to Hasan Minhaj (Indian-American comedian and actor) talking about how some of the people in his culture view or describe black people,” Sammy said in his latest Instagram post. He further added

I was angry after listening to him describing a word that they use to describe black people, which he was saying is not in a good way and it was degrading. Instantly I remembered when I played for Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2013 and 2014, I was being called the exact same word that he described

Old tweets resurface to support Sammy’s claims

An old tweet belonging to the Indian fast bowler Ishant Sharma resurfaced in social media platforms. The lanky pacer had addressed Darren Sammy as ‘Kalu’ which is a derogatory word for calling out dark people.

In another interesting event, Darren Sammy has himself referred to the nickname that he was called in his birthday wishes to Sunrisers Hyderabad mentor VVS Laxman.

I’ve had great memories in all the dressing rooms I’ve been in, as a T20 player, as a leader in a dressing room, as a captain, I’ve always been one to build up a relationship or build up a team, not bring it down. I’ll still be angry, and deserve an apology from you guys, because I saw all of you guys as my brothers. So, talk to me, reach out to me, please clear the air,” he said.
