Veteran Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc has addressed growing speculation around his absence from the early stages of IPL 2026, issuing a strong statement clarifying his injury status while also criticizing sections of the media for spreading misinformation.

The left-arm pacer, who is a match-winner for the Delhi Capitals, confirmed that he is currently undergoing rehabilitation for a shoulder and elbow injury that aggravated during the home Ashes series. His absence from the opening phase of the tournament had sparked widespread debate, with several reports questioning his commitment to the league. However, Starc has now responded firmly, putting the narrative before the fans and shedding light on the actual reason behind his unavailability.

Mitchell Starc Opens Up on Injury Concerns

In a detailed statement shared on his social media handle, Starc revealed that the extent of his injury only became clear after the Australian summer, forcing him to prioritize recovery over immediate participation in the IPL.

“Despite the opinions and views of certain individuals with their platforms in and through the Indian media, I’m currently rehabbing and managing an injury in my shoulder and elbow of which I didn’t know the extent of during the Australian summer.

These individuals have made some strong statements around involvement in the IPL and provided heavily misinformed opinions of players, preached them as facts, and claim to know my body better than me.

With that said, I do acknowledge this injury setback and timing is disruptive to the Delhi team and I apologise for that and to the fans for not being available for the early part of this season.

I remain committed to join DC, am in continual communication updating the team and will continue to do what I can to be available for DC asap.”

The statement not only clarified his medical condition but also highlighted the frustration among players when narratives are shaped without accurate information.

Mitchell Starc remains the leader of Delhi Capitals’ pace attack

Starc’s absence is a significant blow for the Delhi Capitals, who had secured his services as a marquee overseas pacer during the IPL 2025 auctions. The Delhi franchise acquired the Aussie veteran for a whopping ₹11.75 crore. Known for his ability to deliver in high-pressure situations, Starc was expected to lead the team’s pace attack, especially during the powerplay and death overs.

His experience in global tournaments, including World Cups and previous IPL seasons, makes him one of the most valuable assets in T20 cricket. Without him, Delhi Capitals will need to reshuffle their bowling combination and rely on backup options in the initial matches. The franchise has yet to confirm a specific timeline for his return, but Starc’s statement suggests that he is actively working towards regaining full fitness.

Media Criticism Sparks Debate

A key aspect of Starc’s statement was his direct criticism of “misinformed opinions” circulating in the media. In recent days, speculation had intensified regarding his absence, with some reports suggesting a lack of commitment to the IPL.

Starc’s response underscores a growing concern among international players regarding how narratives are shaped without verified medical updates. His remarks also highlight the pressure players face when balancing national commitments, injuries, and franchise cricket.

This incident is likely to reignite discussions around responsible sports journalism and the need for accurate reporting, especially in high-profile tournaments like the IPL.

Despite the controversy, Starc has reaffirmed his commitment to Delhi Capitals, stating that he remains in constant communication with the team management. His assurance will come as a relief to fans, who were concerned about his availability for the season.

The franchise, known for its strong core of Indian and overseas players, will be hoping for his return sooner rather than later as they aim to make a deep run in IPL 2026.

What’s next for DC?

The Capitals have won their opening fixture of the Tata IPL 2026 against the Lucknow Super Giants on April 1st at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow by 6 wickets. They will now head to their home to host the 5-time champions Mumbai Indians on Saturday afternoon. Playing a home game without Mitchell Starc against an opponent like the 5-time champions could be tricky for the Capitals.

However, Proteas pacer Lungisani Ngidi, who stepped in the last game for Mitchell Starc, was prolific with the ball, scalping 3 wickets, including the big fish Nicholas Pooran. Ngidi was the man of the hour with the ball against LSG, and the DC team management would be hoping he continues in the same rhythm.
