Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan are undoubtedly one of the greatest limited-overs opening pair India has ever produced. Ever since they batted together for the first time in the 2013 Champions trophy, they have been busy rewriting history books. Both of them were involved in a conversation with India’s newfound test opener Mayank Agarwal in BCCI TV, wherein Shikhar opened up on how he ended up having the nickname ‘Gabbar’.

The opening pair of Dhawan and Rohit came into the international scenes when MS Dhoni decided to promote the then middle-order batsman Rohit into an opener. The pair since then have been incredible for India in limited over cricket. Together they have scored 4802 runs at an average of 45.30 in 107 matches in ODI’s alone. They have also been part of 16-century partnerships in ODI’s, which is the fifth-best overall and third-best among openers.

Dhawan revealed that both of them were great friends off the field. They’ve been friends ever since their U-19 days, even before they started to open the innings together and that bond helped them while they were in the field.

Shikhar Dhawan is fondly called by the nickname ‘Gabbar’ by his teammates and fans. In his conversation with Mayank, he revealed the incident that led him to be referred by this nickname.

Dhawan debut

Dhawan made his test debut in 2013 and scored the fastest ever century by a debutant in a test match during that match. He recollected that he ended up being not out on the end of first days play and when he was walking to the pavilion he twirled his mustache a little, and that photo was circulated on newspapers and various social media sites the next day, and he added that it was that image that latter led to the nickname ‘Gabbar’.

During the conversation, Mayank asked the duo to describe their favourite individual innings and Rohit elaborated upon his double hundred in Mohali. He added that it was his wedding anniversary that day and it was probably the best gift he could give to his wife. Dhawan talked about his debut test match and how his wife has been his lady charm ever since their marriage in 2012.
