For Australia, senior opening batsman Usman Khawaja definitely played a very important role to help his team end up on the winning side in this opening Test against England. After having lost early wickets on Day 2, he went on to score a beautiful century and also notched up a vital half-century in the fourth innings. Thus, Khawaja was named the Man of the Match award winner in the ENG vs AUS Ashes 2023 1st Test.
After having won the toss and opted to bat first on a pretty flat Edgbaston pitch, England posted a challenging total of 393 for 8, however, their declaration could be a big point of discussion. Joe Root composed a wonderful unbeaten innings of 118 runs that consisted of 7 fours and 4 sixes. Zak Crawley also provided England with a fine start of 61 runs at the top while Jonny Bairstow smashed an aggressive knock of 78 runs. For Australia, Nathan Lyon was the pick of the bowlers having taken four crucial wickets.
Australia did not had the best of starts in the first innings having lost the trio of David Warner, Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith quite cheaply. However, it was Usman Khawaja who stood up amazingly well under pressure as he scored a sensational innings of 141 runs that included 14 fours and 3 sixes. Travis Head and the in-form Alex Carey also batted really well having scored crucial fifties respectively. But then, the England bowlers made an impressive comeback towards the end to bowl out Australia for 386 runs and take a slight 7-run lead. In the second innings, England once again preferred to opt for the “Bazball” approach but they ended up losing both their openers early. The batting trio of Root, Harry Brook and Ben Stokes did get starts each but all of them failed to convert into big innings. The hosts got bowled out for 273 runs in 66.2 overs having set a big target of 281 runs in the fourth innings. For Australia, both Cummins and Lyon took four wickets each.
While chasing a daunting total, Australia’s star-studded trio of Warner, Smith and Labuschagne failed to contribute much with the bat. However, it was once again Khawaja who stood up under pressure as he played the anchor role from one end. The southpaw opener played yet another fantastic knock of 65 runs. However, the duo of Stokes and Root then brought the England team back in the game by dismissing Khawaja and Alex Carey with a lead of exceeding 50 runs.
The 1st Ashes 2023 Test match once again saw a major twist which eventually proved to be the final nail in the coffin as the pair of Cummins and Lyon surprised everyone by adding a phenomenal unbeaten 55-run stand for the 9th wicket to help Australia register an excellent win.
