The first match for the Dinesh Karthik led Kolkata Knight Riders in this year’s IPL was built up to be a match between two heavyweights as they took on Mumbai Indians here in Abu Dhabi. The contest was expected to be a closely fought encounter but turned out to be a one sided affair.

Lady luck smiling on Eoin Morgan

Eoin Morgan , the dynamic English white ball captain returned to IPL after a gap of two odd years and was straightaway put in a high pressure run chase where the required run rate was over 12 when he came on to bat. Kolkata Knight Riders needed their experienced duo of Eoin Morgan and the dangerous Andre Russell to take them home and also needed to have some luck on their way.

During the 13th over Mumbai’s premier bowler Jasprit Bumrah came on to bowl and displayed a bowling masterclass. He had showcased all the skillset that he possess by executing his yorker, slower ball and bouncer. On the fifth delivery, he bowled a sharp bouncer which struck the chest area of Eoin Morgan and as he swivelled the ball rolled on to the stumps but the led bails didn’t even light up and never looked like being dislodged. This was the kind of luck that one should be thankful for having and everyone expected Morgan to make it big and take his side home along with Andre Russell.

Too big a task for dangerous Dre Russ

The target of 196 set by Mumbai Indians in the end turned out to be too much for Kolkata Knight Riders as they fell short by 49 runs in the end. The match was effectively lost by the 16th over when Jasprit Bumrah came back to pick up the big wickets of both the overseas pros whom KKR where heavily banking on.

It was a bowling masterclass by Jasprit Bumrah for his third over as well where he bowled a beauty of a slower one leg cutter to disturb the stumps of Andre Russell and then another off cutter to have Eoin Morgan caught behind.
