Former Sri Lanka captain denies the over-dependence of Indian team on Kohli

Virat is excellent, but others are significant too: Sangakkara

Former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara feels that it would be unfair to label India as over-dependent on Virat Kohli and has asserted that India lacked preparation in the first two Tests.

England have won the first two Tests against India in Birmingham and Lord’s, and India’s worrying factor so far has remained that no other batsman has been able to perform except Kohli.

“To say that no other batsman has performed well will be unjust. Virat Kohli is a fantastic player and an incredible performer, but others are fantastic too,” Sangakkara said in an interview.

“Rahane and Pujara are incredible batsmen. Murali Vijay, KL Rahul, Shikhar Dhawan, Dinesh Karthik- these are significant names too,” he added.

Indian batsmen have struggled on English soil: Sangakkara

“They have struggled here and one of the main reasons for that might be that they lacked preparation. So they really need to think hard and figure out a way of dealing with this.”

“English bowlers have exploited the sub-continental weaknesses here and that has put more questions on the team,” he said.

India faced its first innings defeat at Lord’s under the captaincy of Virat Kohli where India lost by an innings and 159 runs.

“It all went wrong at the toss itself. Bowling conditions favoured England and James Anderson and Chris Woakes made life difficult for them.”

Sangakkara felt India’s selection for Lord’s was influenced by the way they performed in the first Test and he said that changing the playing XI in every match might have an adverse impact on the team.

“They should have played an extra batsman at Lord’s rather than playing an extra bowler.”

“Virat has fielded different playing XI for 37 Tests now. I don’t think that it is a bad thing to do but it is very necessary to maintain some consistency as it gives the players a confidence and courage to go out there are performing well.”

“Sometimes tinkering with the playing XI can be negative. So the change has to be always tactical.”
