Tension appears to be mounting in the Indian dressing room. According to several media reports, multiple senior members of the Indian cricket team are reportedly unhappy with the head coach, Gautam Gambhir’s coaching style and the way he is operating the team.
Gambhir’s tenure has brought monumental victories for the Indian team, including the titles of Champions Trophy 2025, Asia Cup 2025 (T20I), and T20 World Cup 2026. However, his coaching approach has drawn criticism in red-ball cricket, where Team India has been whitewashed not once but twice at home. This has resulted in mounting scrutiny from both players and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Reports indicate that the core issue behind the discontent is a perceived lack of accountability and a habit of shifting blame after tough defeats. According to reports, several experienced cricketers feel that underperforming individuals or external factors are often held responsible for losses, rather than the coaching staff taking collective responsibility.
As per the current situation, a recent media report noted:
“It is understood that some senior players have privately conveyed their reservations about Gambhir’s coaching style to former India cricketers as well as members of the BCCI Apex Council. While these discussions remain informal, they have added to the scrutiny surrounding the head coach.”
Things reportedly escalated following India’s disappointing run in red-ball cricket, including multiple home Test series losses, particularly the twin whitewashes against South Africa and New Zealand.
Gautam Gambhir has previously acknowledged the pressures of his high-profile position while defending his core values of honesty and intent. Addressing rumors of a rift within the team, the former Indian opener maintained that making mistakes is a natural part of leadership and learning.
Speaking candidly about his coaching journey, Gambhir stated:
“Yes, I am human and I should be allowed to make mistakes as well. Just like anyone else, players should be allowed to make mistakes.”
He further clarified his coaching philosophy regarding team decisions:
“I must have made mistakes in the last 18 months. I don’t shy away from that, but I’ve always believed in one thing. Wrong decision with right intent is acceptable, but wrong decision with wrong intent is absolutely not acceptable in that dressing room.”
The contrast in India’s performance across formats has created a unique dynamic. Under Gambhir, the white-ball squad has functioned with precision and success, capturing major international silverware. However, Test cricket has presented significant hurdles. Frequent tactical shifts, player rotation, and tough domestic mandates have created a sense of uncertainty among seasoned red-ball specialists.
After a disappointing tour of the United Kingdom, Team India will next travel to their neighboring country, Sri Lanka, for a 2-match Test series. Under Gambhir, Team India batters in Test cricket have consistently struggled against spinners at home. Sri Lanka will pose a litmus test for the Indian batters, as the island nation is known for its quality spin bowling attack.
While Gambhir retains his contract through to the 2027 ODI World Cup, a strong performance in Sri Lanka will be vital to restoring belief in the dressing room and reassuring the BCCI hierarchy of his long-term red-ball vision.
