The Indian Premier League (IPL) off-season trade market is buzzing with speculation, and former Indian cricket captain Kris Srikkanth has added fuel to the fire. The 1983 World Cup winner has backed Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to make a massive trade move to secure star all-rounder Hardik Pandya from the Mumbai Indians (MI).

According to Srikkanth, KKR should be more than willing to part ways with top domestic talents like finisher Rinku Singh and pacer Harshit Rana if it guarantees landing a world-class, seam-bowling all-rounder of Hardik’s caliber, who could even lead the side, particularly after the departure of Ajinkya Rahane.

Why Srikkanth Endorses the KKR-Hardik Pandya Trade

Following a disappointing season for Mumbai Indians where they finished near the bottom of the table, rumors have made rounds about Hardik Pandya’s future with the franchise. KKR, meanwhile, are looking for strong leadership and core balance as they rebuild their squad setup.

Speaking on his official YouTube channel, Srikkanth made a bold assessment regarding what KKR should offer in exchange for the 32-year-old marquee player. Addressing the trade proposition directly, Srikkanth stated:

“Rinku Singh is a decent player, nothing extraordinary. Harshit Rana is a good bowler. But if Hardik is willing to join KKR, I would give up both of them.”

Srikkanth emphasized that acquiring a genuine, proven game-changer like Hardik outweighs the risk of letting go of young domestic players, especially when a franchise is aiming for long-term roster construction.

Rebuilding Perspective for Kolkata Knight Riders

Expanding further on KKR’s squad dynamics, the former chief selector highlighted that Kolkata needs a clear strategy to restructure their lineup effectively. While acknowledging Harshit Rana’s bowling skill, Srikkanth pointed out that recent performances should dictate trade decisions rather than past laurels.

Elaborating on the squad-building logic for KKR, Srikkanth explained:

“They also have to rebuild their side. Rinku Singh won’t be a great loss for them. Harshit Rana might be a huge loss for them. But Harshit also didn’t have a great IPL last year. He was good only the year before that.”

For KKR, an all-rounder like Hardik Pandya brings a multi-faceted advantage—providing solid middle-order batting, reliable seam overs, and proven leadership experience.

Srikkanth’s Take on Mumbai Indians’ Position

While Srikkanth strongly urged KKR to pursue the deal, he remained skeptical about whether Mumbai Indians would accept incoming players in return without extreme caution. Srikkanth believes MI must be highly strategic about any potential trade deals they negotiate.

Offering his perspective on MI’s decision-making process, Srikkanth noted:

“MI shouldn’t go for it. Why will they go for Axar Patel and not Prithvi Shaw or someone? There is no scope for that. Also, I wouldn’t trade for Head if I were MI, as he doesn’t fit with MI.”

As franchises prepare their strategies ahead of the next IPL season, Srikkanth’s thoughts have set off an intense debate among cricket enthusiasts regarding player valuation and trade dynamics in modern T20 leagues. Whether Hardik would hop to KKR or not remains to be seen, but for now, the IPL trade window is definitely heating up.
