The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Men’s Selection Committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, has officially announced the Indian squads for the upcoming home bilateral assignment against Afghanistan (IND vs AFG). The series will feature a lone Test match starting on June 6 in Mullanpur, followed by a three-match ODI series running from June 14 to June 20 in Dharamsala, Lucknow, and Chennai, respectively.

With the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup cycle in mind and the need for workload management after a grueling domestic season, the selectors have made some big structural changes. Young batting sensation Shubman Gill will continue his run as captain, leading the national side in both formats.

IND vs AFG: Key Changes in both squads

The biggest news from the Test squad announcement is a shake-up in leadership. Wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant has been replaced as the vice-captain for the Test match, with the experienced KL Rahul stepping in as the deputy under Gill. However, Pant is still a major part of the middle order alongside young keeper Dhruv Jurel.

Over in the 50-over ODI format, Shreyas Iyer has been named the vice-captain. This squad also sees the return of Ishan Kishan to the white-ball team as the backup wicketkeeper behind KL Rahul. Rishabh Pant continues to remain sidelined from the ODI setup.

IND vs AFG: Star seniors rested

As part of strict workload management guidelines, the team management and selectors have decided to rest premier fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah from both the Test match and the ODI series to keep him fresh for the packed international calendar ahead. Senior all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel have also been given a complete break from both squads.

Additionally, fans will have to wait for a final fitness update on senior icons Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya. Their inclusion in the ODI squad depends on clearing final tests at the BCCI Centre of Excellence. If they pass, their presence alongside Virat Kohli will give India a massive, experienced top order.

Maiden Call-Ups and Uncapped Rewards

The selectors have strongly rewarded excellent domestic and Indian Premier League (IPL) performances by handing out four maiden senior call-ups across both formats.

  • Prince Yadav: The fast bowler earns his maiden ODI call-up following a phenomenal breakout season with the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), where his raw pace and discipline caught everyone’s attention.
  • Gurnoor Brar & Manav Suthar: The Gujarat Titans teammates have been called up to the senior national squad. Left-arm spinner Suthar and pacer Brar have both earned places in the red-ball squad to boost the bowling transition.
  • Harsh Dubey: The domestic star features as a fresh face in both the Test and ODI squads. Chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar highly praised Dubey, noting that he fits the perfect mold for a long-term bowling all-rounder.
